[Legacy Report] 2nd EXCOM Meeting-IEEE PES SL Chapter

The meeting was conducted via Skype and chaired by the Chairman, Prof. J. B. Ekanayake. The following matters were discussed. 1. Prof. J. B. Ekanayake mentioned that the Lanka Transformers Ltd agreed to fully sponsor the field visit/get together. This event will be organized in June/ July by Dr. U. Hemapala and Dr. S. K. Abeygunawardane. The field visit will cover Seguwanthivu and Vidathamunai wind farm, Kerawalapitiya power plant and the coal power plant (if possible) at Puttalum. The expected number of participants is 25 (80% of the PES members). It was decided to get the email confirmation from the participants. 2. A workshop on wide area techniques will be organized in the later part of August or in the early part of September as a joint event with IEEE. Chair has already contacted a distinguished lecturer for this workshop and the distinguished lecturer has expressed his willingness to come. In addition, Prof. J. B. Ekanayake and Mr. Kusum Shanthi (CEB) may also contribute as resource persons. Chair may also contact ABB representative in Sri Lanka to see what support we could get. It was decided to conduct this workshop at two locations (one location in Colombo and one location in Kandy). This event will be planned by Prof. J. B. Ekanayake and Dr. P. J. Binduhewa. 3. It was discussed to organize a poster competition among MSc./MPhil/Phd and undergraduate research students who are working in the area of power and energy. This will be a one-day event. Postgraduate research work and good undergraduate research projects will be presented using posters. A panel will evaluate each work and select the winners. This event will be planned by Dr. J. R. S. S. Kumara, Dr. S. K. Abeygunawardane and Dr. U. Hemapala. 4. The Chair, Prof. J. B. Ekanayake will represent PES SL Chapter at the PES Chapter Chairs meeting of this year. This meeting is scheduled to be on 19th May 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 5. It was mentioned that the annual accounts of IEEE PES SL Chapter were submitted to the IEEE SL section. The treasurer of the IEEE SL Section will be reminded regarding the payment of the rebate allocated for IEEE PES SL Chapter. 6. It was discussed to organize some fund raising workshops. Dr. L. N. Widanagama Arachchige proposed to organize a workshop on simulation software. She further said that she will contact Dr. Muthumuni (Manitoba) and try to get his contribution for this. It was also discussed to organize a workshop in the North part of Sri Lanka. Chair requested the committee members to email ideas, if there is any. 7. The secretary was requested to submit the L31 form to report the EXCOM meeting. 8. It was decided to schedule the next EXCOM meeting in IESL, Colombo on 29th May 2014 at 2 p.m.
