The meeting was chaired by the Chairman, Prof. J. B. Ekanayake. The Chair welcomed everyone to the third EXCOM meeting. Then, the following matters were discussed. 1. The Chair, Prof. J. B. Ekanayake shared his experience at the PES Chapter Chairs meeting and mentioned about the “Outstanding Chapter Awardâ€. He further mentioned that PES SL Chapter should aim for this award under the large group category. It was discussed to fulfill the following requirements which are considered in selecting the PES outstanding chapter. • A website for IEEE PES SL Chapter: The need of a website for IEEE PES SL Chapter was highlighted. Dr. U. Hemapala said that it would be better to develop this website in IEEE domain. He further said that he will contact the Chair/IEEE SL section and discuss the possibility of doing this. Mr. P. A. G. S. Abeynayake said that he will discuss about the development of this website with the web master of IEEE SL section. • EXCOM members in charge of the activities of IEEE Women in Engineering and activities of IEEE Young Professionals: Dr. L. N. Widanagama Arachchige was appointed as the EXCOM member in charge of the activities of IEEE Women in Engineering and Mr. P. A. G. S. Abeynayake was appointed as the EXCOM member in charge of the activities of IEEE Young Professionals. • Outstanding Engineer Award: It was discussed to recognize an IEEE PES member for the “Outstanding Engineer Awardâ€. Dr. U. Hemapala and Mr. W. M. T. Vijayananda said that calling nominations would be more appropriate than calling applications. Prof. J. B. Ekanayake said that he will prepare a format to receive nominations. This format will be circulated among IEEE PES members. • IEEE PES Scholarship: The committee discussed about offering a scholarship worth US$ 2000 per year to an undergraduate student by IEEE PES SL Chapter. Since the funds are limited, it was decided that this is not possible at the moment. 2. Prof. J. B. Ekanayake said that the visit of the distinguished lecturer (from Alstom, USA) was approved by IEEE, USA. It was decided to schedule this distinguished lecture on 12th September 2014 at the Foundation Centre in Colombo. The topic of the lecture is “Evolution of EMS Control Centers and Synchrophasor Measurements at Control Centers†This event will be jointly organized by IEEE PES SL Chapter, IEEE SL Section and IEEE YP. Mr. P. A. G. S. Abeynayake said that more participants can be attracted for this from CEB, if this is offered at a concessional rate. 3. It was decided to schedule IEEE PES get together/field visit on 29th July 2014 in Puttalam. Dr. S. K. Abeygunawardane will inform IEEE PES members about this event and collect required information such as meal preferences and transport requirements from the participants. Mr. W. M. T. Vijayananda and Mr. P. A. G. S. Abeynayake will organize transport from Kandy and Colombo, respectively. It was decided to hold a special general meeting on the same day to pass resolutions for the followings. • To increase the number of years in the office of the current and future office bearers from one to two years • To decide who will represent IEEE PES SL Chapter at the PES Chapter Chairs meeting • To convert the position “Vice Chair†to “Chair Elect†4. It was decided to schedule the PSCAD workshop in the first week of July at a computer lab in the University of Moratuwa. This workshop will be conducted by Dr. Dharshana Muthumuni for 50 undergraduates (30 from UOM, 10 from UOP, 10 from UOR). Dr. L. N. Widanagama Arachchige will check the availability of computer labs and finalize the venue. She will also check the possibility of organizing this event jointly with EESOC and try to get funds for refreshments and the souvenir from EESOC. 5. Dr. P. J. Binduhewa mentioned that IEEE PES received the rebate from IEEE SL Section. 6. It was decided to initiate an IEEE PES student chapter in the University of Ruhuna by the next year. In addition, it was discussed to form IEEE PES student chapters in SLIIT, the University of Jaffna and the University of Colombo. 7. The committee decided to reimburse travel expenses incurred for attending meetings.
