[Legacy Report] Talk on "Real Time Wide Area Monitoring System using Synchrophasors: Monitor System Wide Disturbances"
June 6, 2016 · 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM @ Colombo
Description
Implementation of a real time wide area monitoring system using Synchrophasors, which monitors, records and stores measurements from critical locations (generating stations and main load centres) is very important for a power system. The synchrophasor technology is implemented very successfully to prevent the system-wide blackout in United States of America, Canada, China, India, and in many European countries. The information collected and monitored from all around the system will be helpful to analyze any short term or long-term events. This technology is very useful in the Control Center to monitor the real time behaviour of the power system efficiently, and with better visualization compared to the existing SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system due to very high resolution of the available system data. With Synchrophasor technology, it is easy to analyze the disturbance throughout the country due to common GPS satellite global reference time signal. In addition, this information will be useful to pin-point the root causes and make corrective actions to prevent such events in the future. Furthermore, implementation of such monitoring system is beneficial to evaluate, retune and modify very important devices such as controllers and protection systems. This technical presentation was focused on the introduction of the Synchrophasor technology, its benefits and some practical applications. An experimental setup will also be used to demonstrate the operation and benefits of a wide area monitoring system
