“ TrailBlazers’17 ” is a project conducted by IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka (YP SL) Affinity Group as a STEP (Student Transition and Elevation Partnership) event under the theme of “1000 steps towards sustainability: Water, Energy and Solid Waste”, that took place on 30th July 2017 in 3 different geographical locations in the country, viz Delkanda, Matara and Kandy. The IEEE team disseminated knowledge on sustainable living, explained them the future environmental challenges such as droughts, diseases, garbage disposal issues etc. Meanwhile, they created awareness on how every individual could contribute to reducing the damage inflicted upon the environment each day. As an encouragement and a guide, anyone who returned few polythene bags were gifted an attractive reusable bag. This gift was to make them listen and to remember them what was said for some time. The approach was in a personalized friendly manner, yet information delivered in a customized comprehensive way. IEEE YP SL Team shared and spread their dream of a world where we don't want to protect the environment. But to create a world where no one needs intentional reminders to protect the environment. Over 1000 reusable bags were distributed during the event in three geographical locations within a period of 1 hour and over 10 kilo grams of polythene were collected and handed over to polythene collection center for recycle process. This event also facilitated a meetup between student members and Young Professionals where they exchange experience they took as YPs.
