Description

Internet of Things (IoT) is one of major disruptive technology developed in recent history and it can be considered as next era in the IT sector which would take the field of technology to new heights. IoT is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. IoT helps to communicate between people to people, people to physical objects and physical objects to other physical objects. Innover 2017 is a workshop series organized by IEEE Industry Applications Society Sri Lanka Chapter (IAS Sri Lanka Chapter) in collaboration of IEEE Sri Lanka Section and IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Sri Lanka Chapter, on Internet of Things (IoT). The main session of the series was done by Prof. Venkatesha Prasad. Venkatesha Prasad is an Assistant Professor of Embedded Software, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. He has served as the Secretary IEEE ComSoc Standards Development Board. He is also a member of ACM and IEEE ComSoc Standard Program Development Board. His area of interests include VoIP, Cognitive Radio, Internet of Things, Personal Networks, 60GHz Networking, Computer Networks, Traffic Modelling, Software Product Development, Modelling and Analysis, Emulation of Wireless PANs, Energy Efficiency in Wireless Networks. Prof. Prasad currently being engaged in the mission of introducing the field of IOT to students and the cutting edge research that was being done at his university. His tendency in IoT towards sustainable development brings a refreshing view about the field to the community. The workshops took place on 6th, 7th and 9th of June respectively. First workshop was held at VirtusaPolaris, Colombo to which, more than 50 participants attended. Other workshops were conducted at University of Peradeniya and University of Ruhuna. Mobitel was the Platinum partner for the workshop series. Magicblocks.io, a newly emerging smart IOT platform also shared their knowledge to the first workshop held at Virtusa. Magicblocks.io is a service that makes the handling of devices connected to an IOT network very easy for a beginner. This platform includes a hardware component much like Arduino and a web interface. Users are able to manage the connected Magicblocks devices to a single account through the web interface. Innover was held into success by a group of young volunteer undergraduates from different universities across the island.
