Description

StudPro Career Fair was an initiative by IEEE Young Professional Sri Lanka Section 2017 ExCom to provide a platform for IEEE student members to expose their talent to the industries as well as to encourage the student members to continue their IEEE membership as Young Professionals. The second edition of the StudPro Career Fair, StudPro 2.0, was held on 14th September 2018 throughout the day from 8.30 AM to 4.30 PM at the University of Moratuwa with the attendance of over 80 final year undergraduates/ fresh graduates who were looking for an entry-level opportunity. Eleven leading companies in the fields of Power Engineering, Software and IT, Telecommunication, Electronic and Automation and Industrial Management participated at the career fair - Creative Software, Dialog Axiata PLC, Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd, JLanka Technologies (Pvt) Ltd, Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd, Minel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Mitra Innovation Ltd, Nikini Automation Systems (Pvt) Ltd, Sysco Labs, Virtusa. Spot interviews and recruitments, as well as mock interviews, took place at the event. There were many other benefits for attendees such as resume feedback sessions, learn about job roles and their responsibilities, get connected with industry professionals - to name a few. The initial plan was to have the career fair exclusively for IEEE members only; But considering some requests and the number of non-IEEE registrations it was decided to open up the event for non-IEEE members as well with a registration fee of 500 LKR. Number of IEEE student members: 70 Number of IEEE YP members: 7 Number of non-members: 11 Event marketing was mainly focussed through social media such as a Facebook event was created for the event about a month prior to the event and all the event flyers were posted on chapter Facebook page. Also, the flyers were sent out to all student branch chapter chairs in the section to share among undergraduates in their respective universities. The feedback for the event from both participated job seekers and companies were highly positive. Following are a few of them: “As a company in the software industry, we always go for the career fairs hold by computing faculties in the universities only. It was really good to meet and talk with students with electronics and telecommunication backgrounds who are interested to move into programming; We will be scheduling them the second round of technical interviews within the next two weeks.” - Channa De Silva, Software Engineering Director, Creative Software
