Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference (MERCon) is the international conference organized by the Engineering Research Unit (ERU) of the University of Moratuwa in collaboration with University of Moratuwa and IEEE student branch of University of Moratuwa. This is an international multidisciplinary engineering research conference which was held for the fifth time on July 3-5, 2019 at Civil Engineering Complex. There were more than 200 papers submitted and 140 are accepted after the peer review process. These selected papers were submitted to publish in IEEEXplore. The main topics under the conference are Big Data, Machine Learning and Cloud Computing, Biomedical Engineering and Instrumentation, Chemical and Process Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Energy and Environmental Engineering, Engineering Mathematics and Statistics, Machine vision and Image Processing, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Systems, Micro/Nano Electro Mechanical Systems, Mechatronics and Micro mechatronics, Power Systems, Electrical Machines and High Voltage, Robotics and Control, Signal Processing and Telecommunication System, Software Engineering, Technology Management, Transport & Logistics Management and Textile & Apparel. MERcon was co-sponsored by IEEE, IEEE Sri Lankan Section, Sri Lanka Section chapter of IEEE Power and Energy Society, Sri Lanka Section chapter of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, Faculty of Graduate Studies of University of Moratuwa and financially sponsored by National Science Foundation. The key speeches for the event were delivered by Prof. Weerathunga Malalasekara, Loughborough University, United Kingdom; Prof. J. Katupitiya, University of New South Wales, Australia and Prof. Nandana Rajathewa, University of Oulu, Finland. MERCon co-hosted “ERU-Symposium” which was organized by IEEE Student Branch University of Moratuwa in addition to the main conference and it is MERCon’s predecessor aimed at stimulating and fostering student research.
