Description

The evening of 5th March 2020 was undoubtedly one of the most exciting evenings University of Moratuwa has ever experienced. It was IEEE Open Day organized by the IEEE Student Branch University of Moratuwa, the day for curious new batch at the university to explore deep into what IEEE was all about while having lots of fun! Prior to the event, the enthusiastic newbies streamed towards the multitude of stalls hosted by each IEEE Student Branch Chapter and Affinity Group at the university. At our very own Industry Applications Society stall, the visitors got the chance to learn more about what IAS was, its scope and the benefits of joining IAS. They also caught glimpses of the numerous events we have completed so far, including workshops, guest lectures, IAS Comrades, IEEE for the Countryside, Stream Up and also about IAS Videography Team, which turned the heads of a lot of newbies. The interested members were recruited for IEEE IAS SBC of University of Moratuwa for volunteering. At the stall, we also distributed informatory leaflets regarding the benefits of joining IEEE IAS and IEEE IAS CMD Contests for undergraduates and urged them to submit the great projects they have done. We also gifted them attractive IAS laptop stickers. After visiting the stalls, the crowd, exceeding 300 in number, piled into the New Auditorium at Faculty of Information Technology. The session commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, followed by the Welcome Speech by Ms. Avishka Thuduwage, Project Chairperson of IEEE Open Day 2020. Afterwards, Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu, our Branch Counsellor and Prof. Ruwan Gopura, Chairman of IEEE Sri Lanka Section addressed the gathering. Afterwards, Mr. Peshan Sampath, Chairman of Student Activities Committee, IEEE Sri Lanka Section, conducted a session titled “My IEEE Experience” where he elaborated upon the rollercoaster ride of his journey at IEEE and the massive destinations he has reached. Then, a fun Kahoot session was conducted by Mr. Chamika Sudasinghe, Section Student Representative of IEEE Sri Lanka Section, and winners were awarded with prizes. Afterwards came another highlight of the event; session by Chanux Bro, the famous Youtuber who has captured the hearts of the Sri Lankan youth with his awesome reviews on trending new gadgets. The event concluded with the distribution of prizes for the IEEE Open Day contest winners and tokens of appreciation followed by the vote of thanks.
