The online webinar “ Accelerate your technical career ” organized by the IEEE Women in Engineering student branch affinity group of University of Moratuwa was held on 9 th of May 2020 from 7.30 pm to 8.30 pm on Facebook live. The guest speaker for the webinar was Mr. Milton Silva who is an independent technology business consultant in USA as well as the former divisional chief engineer in Intel Corporation in USA. As an experienced Engineer with over 30 years of experience in the technical and cooperate fields he shared his real-life experience as well as his insights about technical careers in private industry with us. His key point was that the technical skills are not enough to be successful in a career. He emphasized the fact the that while technical skills are critically important, other professional and personal skills are far more important in being both effective and in moving forwards in one’s career. With suitable examples he discussed what corporate senior management is looking for when identifying high potential individuals. He also explained that as an undergraduate what skills should one develop in order to achieve success in their future career. As an end note he mentioned that women too have the potential to be in high tech fields and in senior management positions and encouraged all the young females to excel in their fields of study without being afraid. For undergraduates or any other person striving to be step into the technical industry, the webinar was extremely useful and influential. The speaker covered a lot of important topics and answered many questions related to the problems that undergraduates frequently encounter. Being different from the traditional way of conducting webinars the speaker made the session really interesting showing some excellent speaking skills, and was able to maintain the enthusiasm of the audience till the end of the session by a few songs sung by him while playing his guitar. Since he was a well experienced person his advices were very insightful and, being a Sri Lankan leader in global senior management position in a high technical field, he inspired us to believe in ourselves and work hard with our maximum potential to achieve what we dream of.
