Description

“Way to Wisdom” is a series of online workshops which was organized by the IEEE Industry Applications student activities committee (IASAC) in collaborate with LEO club of SLTCwith the participation of undergraduates of SLTC, in order to provide knowledge about the career opportunities and paths for the Engineering students at SLTC, in which a student can confidently follow. Considering that most of the Engineering undergraduates tend to follow the common path and take blind decisions like selecting electives and specialize in last year and get stagnated, this workshop was delivered covering the less spoken possibilities and opportunities as well as proper guidance which will uplift our undergraduates to a state where they succeed at the university and at the industry afterwards. Here we organized five separate online workshops via zoom platform for each of the Engineering disciplines in SLTC named as Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Bio-Systems Engineering, and Information & Communication Engineering, covering the key fact which an employer will expect out of the relevant engineering graduate with 238 participants of SLTC engineering undergraduates. We reached out to every undergraduate at SLTC who are in the verge of stepping into the industrial training module by registering the participants via a google form shared among them and providing the facility of asking questions from the guest speaker and a Q & A session opened for any further clarifications. This project was conducted under the guidance of Dr.Deepika Priyadarshani, with the participation of five guest speakers namely Dr. Manoj Ranaweera, Dr.Kushan Wijesundara, Ms. Buddhini Jayasinghe, Dr. Ajith Pasqual and Mr.Dimuthu Pathiraja for deliver the session and we invited Ms.Warunika Hippola(Advisor IASAC of IEEE Student Branch of SLTC and region 10 student representative 20/21),Mr.Navod Kiriwaththuduwa,Dr.Rjeeve Mallawarachchi, and Ms.Mishenki Rajapaksha to deliver the closing remarks of each session. The first session of the webinar series was held on the 9th January 2021 from 6pm to 7.30pm for the Information and Communication Engineering undergraduates at SLTC by the resource Person for the session, Eng.Dimuthu Pathiraja(Program lead, information and communication engineering, SLTC).By starting this webinar series, the welcome speech is delivered by Mr.Thilina Dananjaya. The session was held throughout for one and half hour and the students were able to get answers for their question regarding their future carrier from the information that Mr.Dimuthu Pathiraja shared during the session. If there are any more clarifications students had given the chance to ask questions during the Q&A session during the last 30minutes so that the time they spend engaging in the workshop, would be more fruitful. The webinar for this module was held under the guidance of IASAC student adviser Ms.Warunika Hippola and the project adviser Dr.Deepika Priyadarshani.Session was started by a introduction of field of Engineering & ICE.Then he Explained about the importance of ICE in the Technological industry, applications of ICE in the industry, explained the role of an ICE in the competitive industry and also he gave an idea how to pursue higher studies related to ICE & motivated the participants. Finally the session was ended by the thanking speech of Chapter vise chair Ms.Tharini Wickramarachchi.Next session for the workshop was held on the next day, 10th January 2021 for the BIO System Undergraduates from 9am to 10.30 under the guidance of the project adviser and the adviser for the session Dr.Deepika Priyadarshani. The guest speaker for the session was Ms. Buddhini Jayasinghe, and she did a remarkable discussion with the students about what the food sector expect from a Bio System undergraduate who specialize in Food Processing and the opportunities that an undergraduate will have in the path they have chosen. Not only the 3rd year students who are in the verge of stepping into industrial training but also the 1st and 2nd year students from batch 7 and 6 who are still gathering the academic knowledge were also able to get an idea on their future carriers. The resource person Ms. Buddhini Jayasinghe further explained that what are the skills that they need to improve and the knowledge they must gather in order to be a successful beginner in the industry. The third session of the Way to Wisdom webinar series was held on 9 th January 2021 from 11.30pm to 1.30pm. The session was held for the Electronics Undergraduates at SLTC. The resource Person for the session was Dr Ajith Pasquel. Starting the session, the Welcoming speech was delivered Mr.Thilina Dananjaya,Chairman IASAC at SLTC. The session was held for one and a half hours. Dr Ajith Pasquel started the session by explaining about the field of Engineering. Then he talked about Electronic & Electrical Engineering, ground realities of Engineering and the Engineer’s toolkit, software that electronics engineers need to excel in, etc. Finally he explained about the opportunities & areas for higher studies like doing Masters. After the session the students were able to get answers for their questions regarding their future endeavours from Dr Ajith Pasquel during the Q&A session. The closing remarks is delivered by Mr.Navod Kiriwaththuduwa and finally the thanking speech was delivered by Nadun Ekanayake Secretary at IASAC SLTC.The fourth session of the webinar series which was for the Mechatronics Undergraduates was held on the 10 th January 2021 from 2.30pm to 4.00pm. The guest speaker for the session was Dr Manoj Ranaweera. The Welcoming speech was delivered by Sasya Senarath Project Co- Chairman at IASAC,SLTC. Dr Manoj Ranaweera nicely done his session by targeting the industry under mechatronics field of engineering. And he advice how to brand our self as an engineer and what are the things that industry expect from a mechatronics engineer. And also he explained about how to succeed as a mechatronics engineer by elaborating “SWOT” analysis. Finally he end the session by taking about local and overseas job opportunities that are open to mechatronics engineers. The session was held for one and a half hours and the students were able to get answers for theirquestions regarding their future endeavours from Dr.Manoj Ranaweera during last 30minutes of Q&A session. The webinar for this module was held under the guidance of Mr.Navod Kirwaththuduwa. The Thanking speech was delivered by Yashodara De Alwis, Project Secretary at IASAC SLTC.The fifth session which was the last of webinar series was held on 10 th January 2021 from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. This session was held for the Civil Engineering Undergraduates under the guidance of Dr. Rajeev Mallawarachchi. The guest speaker for the session was Dr.Kushan Wijesundara The session was held for one anda half hours. First Dr Kushan Wijesundara explained what is Engineering, what are the main laws applying for the Civil Engineering field,What are the usage of learning basic mathematics (like differential equations) and how they applied in analyzing and problem solving.Furthermore he Talked about beams, beam bending, ancient structural designs and modern structural designs with examples (images). Finally he briefly explained about research areas in Civil Engineering field. The session was held for one and a half hours, the thanking speech was delivered by Sathika Gamage, Project Treasurer at IASAC,SLTC.All the five sessions are moderated by Mr.Manula Rajapaksha and Ms.Neranjana Rahmi
