IEEE Awareness Session – 2020
August 26, 2020 · 1:00 PM - 2:45 PM @ Online event
Description
IEEE Student Branch of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was established in 2016 as a student branch of the mother body. Since then, we have been volunteering and carrying out so many events to provide facilities to students in the fields of Computer Science, Engineering, Telecommunication and Robotics. We are the fourth executive committee of the KDU IEEE Student Branch. Due to this COVID-19 pandemic, we had to confront numerous issues when we are accomplishing volunteer work outside. Along these lines, we began our charitable effort in an alternate way, and we have intended to proceed with our exercises on the web. IEEE Awareness Session - 2020 organized with the purpose of giving information to our undergraduates regarding IEEE domain, IEEE memberships, its benefits and how IEEE helps to improve students’ professional careers. Session was held gathering all the Engineering and Computing students of our university on 26th of August 2020 from 6.30 pm to 8.15 pm through Zoom. Mr Chamika Sudusinghe the Student Selection Representative at IEEE Sri Lanka Section and Mr Hasala Dharmawardena (Fourth-year Ph.D. student at Clemson University) were invited as the speakers for this session. First, Mr Chamika Sudusinghe gave a clear understanding about what is IEEE, What IEEE brings to us and what are the requirements we should have in order to become a member, what are the responsibilities of a member, Who is a volunteer, Why should we become a volunteer and Where do the students stand in IEEE? He also spoke about What is IEEE National Project and how our students can join with the National Project. Then, Mr Hasala Dharmawardena shared his life experiences of being an active member of the IEEE community. He explained why IEEE differs from other communities and why IEEE is important. He also started speaking about the benefits one could gain while being a member of IEEE and the industrial value which can be gained by moving on with IEEE. He also talked about IEEE Sri Lanka Session and encouraged all the students to join IEEE. With the 150+ online participants we have been able to successfully conduct the IEEE Awareness Session - 2020. It was a great success, our heartiest complement to our guest speaker for giving us the motivation to make the event a positive and memorable experience. And our immense gratitude to all the participants for being a wonderful audience.
