RAS talk series - Future of Robotics

November 11, 2020 · 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM @ Online event

Description

Future of Robotics, a webinar on the vision of future robotics, was held as an event of the RAS talk series and was the first online webinar, organised by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, the student chapter of the University of Peradeniya. This was held on 11th of November 2020 from 4.00 p.m onwards via the zoom platform and youtube live. The webinar was conducted by Prof. Gamini Dissanayake, a James N Kirby Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). The webinar was opened for all the undergraduates interested in Robotics and who plan to succeed in the Robotics Industry in the future. At the commencement of the event, Dr. Nalin Harischandra gave an introduction to the keynote speaker. Then, the session was handed over to our guest speaker, Prof. Gamini Dissanayake, to carry on with his interesting presentation and open up the eyes of the enthusiastic young students who are willing to learn more about the future with robots. As an approach to the topic, Prof. Dissanayake explained about the vision of future robotics by introducing robot systems and key competencies of Robots. Afterwards, he briefly introduced how the robots have encroached the human job titles but give a more efficient output. He showed that robots have gained the potential to overtake any public job. Also, he did not forget to mention the applications of Robots in both indoors and outdoors. It was really amusing to hear about autonomous robots, self-driving cars and underwater robotic inspections. Finally, the presentation concluded with the most exciting topic where Prof. Dissanayake explained about humanoid robots, their applications and drones. Then the time arrived for the participants, where they were able to clarify their doubts in the Q/A session, which they used very effectively. Also the participants were delighted to give their valuable feedback to us, and we got to know that the session was a complete success. They have fully understood that the vision of future robotics is of machines that serve humanity, helping people live more productive, healthier and happier lives. Finally, to remark the end of the webinar, the Vote of Thanks was delivered by Mr. Madusha Athapaththu, the president of the Robotics and Automation Society, and the session was concluded with more than 100 contended participants.
