Robotricks 21/22 - Phase 1 -Webinar 3- Introduction to Robot Control and Path Planning

July 28, 2021 · 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Online event

Description

The second day of phase 1 of the ROBOTRICKS 21/22 webinar series which was organised by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, the student chapter of the University of Peradeniya, was held on 28 th of July 2021 from 6.00 p.m onwards via zoom platform. The webinar was conducted by Dr.Tharindu Weerakoon, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The webinar was opened for all the undergraduates interested in Robotics and who plan to succeed in the Robotics Industry in the future. The event commenced with an introduction to the keynote speaker. Afterwards, the session was handed over to Dr. Tharindu Weerakoon to carry on with his informative presentation. As an approach to the topic, Dr. Tharindu gave a brief introduction to robotics. He emphasised the importance of learning robotics as undergraduates, which became a strong motivation for all the participants. Then Dr. Tharindu proceeded the session with an informative presentation about the modern trends in robotics and the expected future of the robotics industry. Afterwards, he stepped to the topic of control engineering and talked about robotic control systems with many interesting real-world examples. The next part of the session was based on mathematical modelling, which was highly related to kinematics. Also, he went in-depth in the subject and showed more advanced mathematical approaches to reach the robot’s kinematic model. The latter part of the session was based on obstacles avoidance and path planning algorithms. All these were explained along with real-life examples so that the participants could get a better understanding of these advanced topics. At the end of the main session of the guest speaker, the participants were able to clarify their doubts in the Q/A session, where they were able to get answers to a lot of questions. Moreover, Dr. Tharindu showed many follow-up materials and reference resources for the participants, which will be much beneficial in widening their knowledge of robotics. Finally, to remark the end of the webinar , the Vote of Thanks was delivered by the secretary of the Robotics and Automation Society, and the session was concluded.
