Side Hustles
November 18, 2020 · 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM @ Online event
Description
IEEE Industrial applications society initiated in Sri Lanka, bridging the gap between academia and the industry while promoting the advancement of technology to support industrial applications in the engineering field. The rapid increase of global conversance has intensified the need for a strategic relationship between the university and the industry that goes beyond conventional research projects. Accelerating the strides towards achieving that goal, IEEE IAS Sri Lanka started off the journey organizing "Side Hustles" spotlighting the hustlers out there. Learning the syllabus, gaining the credits to pass a semester, and following the job description are not the only traits that can be done as an undergraduate or a graduate to lay a concrete foundation for their future dream world. The panel discussion was a gist on how an undergraduate can leverage their own spare time while in the university to put a little extra cash in their pocket or to venture into a brand. The discussion also bent towards how an undergraduate should groom themselves to play a vital role in the industry and to support the economic growth of the Sri Lankan ecosystem. In recent days, most of the undergraduates in the technical field strive to make money while being an undergraduate with standing achieving high grades. The session foregrounded how this hustler mindset drew up students even in their careers in the industry. The panellists coloured the discussion with inspiration from knowledge, real-life experiences, and the failures they faced throughout their journey being hustlers. The session was well attended with undergraduates and their positive feedback, marking a remarkable success in joining hands to explore the new horizons of opportunities. Vinoj Jayasundara, a researcher of Australian, Singaporean and Sri Lankan industries and Chamath Palihawadana, who is the co-founder and CTO of Surf Edge (Pvt) Ltd enlightened the audience with their experience, efforts, difficulties faced and passion for their work in becoming fruitful side hustlers.
