Round 02 of InspiHER{Tech}V1.0 InspiHER{MindFest}: Technical Quiz Competition

October 2, 2021 at 2:30 PM - October 5, 2021 at 3:30 PM @ Online event

Description

The IEEE Women In Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group of SLTC introduces InspiHER{Tech} V1.0 for all island-wide female undergraduates to provide a platform for the rising of exemplary women professionals with strong leadership skills who can work together as a team and show their talents in the Science & technology sector. The InspiHER{Tech} V1.0 hopefully inspired 204 female undergraduates representing 21 universities as 68 teams of 3 members each in Sri Lanka by stimulating them to adapt to the high-speed development in the science & technology field by encouraging them to strive forward towards their success & professional growth with a competition of 3 stages which will be very supportive for them to showcase their talents to the whole community. This will boost the self-esteem as well as employment expectations of female undergraduates in Sri Lanka. The whole competition is conducted virtually with 3 rounds namely: Round 01 - InspiHER{CircuitriX}: A Circuit Designing project competition. Round 2 - InspiHER{MindFest}: A Technical Quiz. Round 3 - InspiHER{CodeWars}: A Coding Competition Exposing and stimulating female undergraduates to adapt to the high-speed development in the science and technology field is a necessity nowadays. InspiHER{Tech} V1.0, was organized with that aspiration to inspire female undergraduates to strive toward success in their STEM career paths. InspiHER{Tech} V1.0 was organized in a manner such that 3 rounds that evaluate and inspire female undergraduates glancing over every path of the technology field such as electronics side with a circuit designing project competition as the 1st round, a technical quiz where the technical knowledge, IQ and general knowledge of female undergraduate are evaluated as the 2nd round and algorithmic coding skills of female undergraduates are evaluated with the 3rd round. Likewise, nothing but the most talented female undergraduates composed of multi-talents are raised and other female undergraduates are motivated to rise up by developing their skills, minimizing their weaknesses for a future community of multi-talented female professionals. Prior to the first round of the competition, a workshop was organized for our contestants as well as for all island-wide undergraduates despite gender to learn about Proteus simulation software which has become the trend in simulation. The first round of the competition, InspiHER{CircuitriX} was successfully concluded after a VIVA session to the highly scored teams. After all, a voting competition was organized for the contestants’ team-wise. All the teams were required to design a logo for themselves and participate in the voting contest. The winners were decided by the count of votes. InspiHER{MindFest } was the second round of InspiHER{Tech} V1.0. It was executed in the Learning Management System (LMS) of SLTC where all the requirements of the quiz were fulfilled to deliver the best quiz experience for the contestants. It was a great opportunity that we could be able to use the SLTC of LMS for this purpose without going to any other online platforms. The SLTC LMS facilitated the quiz competition. During the quiz time the contestants were provided with breakout rooms for each team to facilitate the round without any issues. The goals of this quiz were to promote team spirit, harmony, and leadership skills, to dispel any insecurity of the young female undergraduates who would work in the science and technology fields in the near future, to instill courage to face obstacles, develop the ability to attempt to overcome any challenge given, bring out hidden abilities and interests, refining the overall knowledge of young undergraduates, the ability to achieve a specific goal by establishing them in the mind and rationalizing it to take immediate measures to solve the issues. The quiz was open to all registered teams, and each competitor received only one attempt. The quiz lasted for one hour and included 40 questions. For each question, 90 seconds were allotted to provide an answer. If the team did not respond within the time limit, it was considered a wrong answer and they were directed to the next question; no negative marks were awarded for incorrect answers. Ultimately, the total quiz marks were added to the final points table. Mrs. Surani Tissera, a senior lecturer at Sri Lanka Technological Campus, oversaw the entire procedure. The questions were first drafted by members of the organizing committee, and then the best ones were chosen from among them with the help of the lecturers. They were then classified as two-minute and three-minute questions depending on the amount of time spent answering each of them. They were then divided into two types: short answer questions and multiple-choice questions. As the final phase in the question-creation process, a question bank of about 165 questions was developed. The questions covered areas like Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, General Knowledge, and many subcategories of Information Communication Technology including Programming, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, and so on . We wanted each member of each team, who were following different degrees, to feel at ease with the questions supplied. We were able to meet that expectation by developing questions from various areas that students could answer regardless of whether they were first year, second year, third year, or final year undergraduates. Finally, after receiving authorization to utilize the platform, we chose to employ our campus's Learning Management System to give a professional experience for all teams. Using the tools provided by our learning management system, we were able to shuffle the questions. We are glad to say that the quiz went smoothly without a hitch. We arranged a meeting using the Zoom platform and assigned separate breakout rooms to each team so that there will be outstanding coordination between team members and the organizing committee, enabling everyone to settle any issues as soon as possible.
