Round 03 of InspiHER{Tech}V1.0 InspiHER{CodeWars}: Algorithmic Coding Competition only for female undergraduates

October 9, 2021 at 12:30 PM - October 11, 2021 at 12:30 PM @ Online event

Description

The IEEE Women In Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group of SLTC introduced InspiHER{Tech} V1.0 for all island-wide female undergraduates to provide a platform for the rising of exemplary women professionals with strong leadership skills who can work together as a team and show their talents in the Science & technology sector. The InspiHER{Tech} V1.0 hopefully inspired 204 female undergraduates representing 21 universities as 68 teams of 3 members each in Sri Lanka by stimulating them to adapt to the high-speed development in the science & technology field by encouraging them to strive forward towards their success & professional growth with a competition of 3 stages which will be very supportive for them to showcase their talents to the whole community. This will boost the self-esteem as well as employment expectations of female undergraduates in Sri Lanka. The whole competition is conducted virtually with 3 rounds namely: Round 01 - InspiHER{CircuitriX}: A Circuit Designing project competition. Round 2 - InspiHER{MindFest}: A Technical Quiz . Round 3 - InspiHER{CodeWars}: A Coding Competition Exposing and stimulating female undergraduates to adapt to the high-speed development in the science and technology field is a necessity nowadays. InspiHER{Tech} V1.0, was organized with that aspiration to inspire female undergraduates to strive toward success in their STEM career paths. InspiHER{Tech} V1.0 was organized in a manner such that 3 rounds that evaluate and inspire female undergraduates glancing over every path of the technology field such as electronics side with a circuit designing project competition as the 1st round, a technical quiz where the technical knowledge, IQ and general knowledge of female undergraduate are evaluated as the 2nd round and algorithmic coding skills of female undergraduates are evaluated with the 3rd round. Likewise, nothing but the most talented female undergraduates composed of multi-talents are raised and other female undergraduates are motivated to rise up by developing their skills, minimizing their weaknesses for a future community of multi-talented female professionals. Prior to the first round of the competition, a workshop was organized for our contestants as well as for all island-wide undergraduates despite gender to learn about Proteus simulation software which has become the trend in simulation. The first round of the competition, InspiHER{CircuitriX} was successfully concluded after a VIVA session to the highly scored teams. After all, a voting competition was organized for the contestants team-wise. All the teams were required to design a logo for themselves and participate in the voting contest. The winners were decided by the count of votes. InspiHER{MindFest}, the second round was a technical quiz competition and it was also successfully concluded. Nowadays, it is very common to organize competitions like hackathons for female undergraduates . Despite of that InspiHER{CodeWars}, the third round of InspiHER{Tech}V1.0 organized an algorithmic coding competition where female undergraduates are empowered for coding inside a community of future women professionals . The HackerRank platform was used for the competition to deliver the best experience of a coding competition for the contestants simillar IEEE Xtream. The most important fact was that this was a coding competition dedicated for female undergraduate which motivated female undergraduates towards coding and enclosed the belief that women are not much good in this sector. One of our objectives was to memorize the fact for all female undergraduates have a negative attitude towards coding that there will be no programming without women: Ada Lovelace. InspiHER {CodeWars} was the 3 rd round of that competition.Competitors' knowledge of technical devices, technology and general theoretical knowledge, algorithms and problem solving skills were tested in these competitions. InspiHER{CodeWars} is the third and final round of the InspiHER{Tech}V1.0, organized by the WIE Affinity Group of SLTC. It became an important milestone as the first algorithm coding challenge organized by SLTC for female undergraduates at any university islandwide. All competitors were required to compete as teams of 3 female members including the team leader, for 6-hours straight, solving problem sets utilizing their problem-solving skills, decision-making skills as well as risk handling abilities using any programming language virtually through the HackerRank platform.InspiHER{CodeWars} was our approach to creating a culture of coding competition among female undergraduates and highlighting female undergraduates’ coding skills. In addition to providing a competitive coding experience, the aim was to attract computer engineering undergraduates who participated in the competition to compete and present their skills. With 204 individuals competing in 68 team registrations representing 21 universities, Code Night really showed a fierce battle for the champions.InspiHER {CodeWars} has certainly focused on exemplary coders and we have been able to give women confidence in their capabilities while preparing them to face major coding challenges in the future. The problems were created by a panel of judges and judged through the HackerRank platform . The problems presented to the competitors were also categorized as easy, moderate, and difficult levels. The Problems here were created by a highly professional panel of judges who have a very good knowledge of technology, and are very well experienced. The competition started with three problems and future problems were usually released every hour or so at the discretion of the organizers. Team members were given the opportunity to make their own plans and discuss using any platform during the competition but were not allowed to exchange codes between teams. (Participants were provided with Zoom breakout rooms). Before the start of the competition all contestants were given a zoom link from their coordinators and through the zoom link, the contestants joined the zoom meeting. At that zoom meeting, the proctors were assigned and there were break-out rooms. So, groups joined these shops. The purpose of these break-out rooms was to inform the organizers if the team had any technical issues or if there was no good platform to meet with team members. Also, by solving these problems, competitors' risk management, design making and technical knowledge skills were evaluated. The winning groups of the InspiHER {CodeWars} were determined based on the scoring mechanism provided by the HackerRank platform. There were no point penalties incurred for incorrect submissions from teams. A submission from one team was considered only if the contestant scored more points than previously attempted for that particular challenge. InspiHER {CodeWars} was a decisive round to determine the winning team of the competition. 35 percent of the total round score was allocated for this round. This round of the competition improved the risk management skills of the competitors. It also encouraged female undergraduates in technology deeds.
