Description

Quizzard is an interactive inter-university quiz competition which was organized by the IEEE Student Branch in University of Ruhuna. The competition was held on 27th and 28th of October 2021 via Zoom platform. The competition was a huge success with 144 competitors (48 teams) with four main rounds. It was a pleasure as many teams participated from different universities from the country, both private and state. The theme of this program was the famous Korean Netflix TV series “Squid Game”, and the rounds of the competition were also organized in the same theme. IEEE SB UOR is expecting to develop memberships, create awareness of the benefits of participating in such competitions and the teamwork skills of undergraduates though this kind of events. The competition’s main intention was to make the participants aware of the values of gaining IEEE membership and the importance of participating these competitions. IQ, General Knowledge and Technical Knowledge of the competitors was measured through this competition. Subjects such as Relationships, Puzzles, Series, Patterns in IQ; History, Science, Sports, Geography, Economy, Politics, Technology, Media & Entertainment, Covid-19 in General Knowledge; Networking, Computer Basics and Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Technical Knowledge were tested in different rounds in the competition. Cash prizes and certificates were given to the Winners, 1st Runners-up and the Most Popular Team. E-certificates for participation were given to all the competitors who participated. Process Round 1 – Red Light Green Light was held on 27th November 2021 from 09.30 am to 11.30 am via Zoom. Before the initiation of the competition, all the participants were welcomed by Mr. Eranda Jayatunga, Head of the Department, DEIE & Senior Treasurer of IEEE Student Branch UOR. The teams were directed to three Zoom links and assigned to breakout room with their team numbers. The quiz was conducted on the online platform “Quizizz”. Each question has 4 answers, MCQ type. The teams had to answer 20 MCQs in 30 minutes. The team who answered fast with the correct answer moved up the leaderboard and scored more marks. Round 2- Marble was held on 27th November 2021 from 1.15 pm to 3.00 pm via Zoom. Once again, the teams were informed of the rules and regulations by the moderators. The 8 teams were divided into 4 teams using the online team picker – PickerWheel. They were assigned to their respective breakout rooms and the quiz was conducted on “Quizizz”. The teams had to answer 30 MCQs in 45 minutes. The team who answered fast with the correct answer moved up the leaderboard and scored more marks. These team members were asked to fill a form indicating preference for the subject they would take (IQ, GK, Technical) in the next round. Round 3- Honeycomb Game was held on 27th November 2021 from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm via Zoom. The team members were informed of the rules and regulations by the moderators. Each team was given three separate question papers under General Knowledge, IQ, and Technical sections. They were assigned to their respective breakout rooms and the quiz was conducted on “Quizizz”. The members had to answer 10 MCQs in 20 minutes. The member who answered fast with the correct answer moved up the leaderboard and scored more marks. The individual scores were counted as contributions to the team total. The final round – Squid Game was held on 28th November 2021 from 4.00 pm to 7.30 pm via zoom. Before the initiation of the competition, all the participants were welcomed by Mr. Ruwantha Jayaweera, Chair, IEEE SB UOR. It was then followed by a speech from our Chief Guest, Prof. E.P. Saman Chandana, Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Ruhuna. In the first round - Hopscotch, two questions were asked individually from each player and if a player was unable to answer, that chance was offered to the same team. The time allocated to answer a question was 30 seconds and each team could score a maximum of 90 marks. In the second round – Crossing the squid neck, five questions were asked from each team. However, if a team fails to answer, that chance was offered to the next team. The time allocated to answer a question was one minute and each team could score a maximum of 50 marks. In the third round – Rapid Fire, a question was displayed and the team who raised the hand first got the chance to answer the question. Similarly, 10 such questions were asked and only 30 seconds were given to answer each question. Team discussions were allowed before raising the hand. However, 10 marks were offered for each correct answer and 5 marks were deducted for any incorrect answer or if the team did not answer after raising the hand. Then, the chance was offered to the next group and 5 marks were offered for the correct answer. The winners of the final round and the Most Popular Team were officially announced with the confirmation of the panel of judges. Next, all the winners were awarded valuable certificates and cash prizes. The panel of judges were awarded a token of appreciation. Finally, QUIZZARD – the Inter University Quiz Competition was successfully concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. Viraj Dissanayake – Former Chair, IEEE SB IAS Society – UOR to all the judges, members of the IEEE student branch of University of Ruhuna and all the participants. Participants 59 teams of 3 students signed up for the quiz competition. Majority of the participants were from University of Ruhuna. There were teams from other universities in the country such as University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, University of Peradeniya, University of Jaffna, Open University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Technological Campus and Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology.
