Introduction to REVIT
March 5, 2022 · 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM @ Online event
Description
The IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Student Branch Chapter of SLTC organized “Introduction to REVIT – Connecting the World with Design ” powered by ZONE 24x7. It was an introductory webinar on a popular, sophisticated design software known as REVIT. This was the most recent project organized by IEEE IAS and was held as a one-day webinar. Revit is a Building Information Modelling (BIM) software by Autodesk widely used in the construction industry and architecture. The BIM concept provides all the necessary tools to plan the entire project lifecycle all in one place. Further, it enables users to go beyond drawing 2D designs to plan their projects efficiently. The advantage of Revit over other software is that it provides a means to construct 3D models and also go further as to execute Project Scheduling allowing the user to work step by step independently. With the popularity of Revit Software booming in the industry, “Introduction to REVIT” primarily focused on introducing this software to our students and providing a starting point for those who already interested in learning it. Revit is a popular software in the corporate world, but only a very few know about the vast usage of this software, which would open up many opportunities for graduates who have already learnt it. A few of the many reasons why REVIT is an interesting software is due to its many applications, such as parametric modeling, where most of the components needed in the model are already built into the software and can be built from scratch if the user wishes. At the same time all the information used to create a Revit model is housed in a single database, so each change made will be updated in the database subsequently. It also provides the ability which allow multiple users to work in the same Revit model at the same time. In the same vein as a Revit model functioning as a single database of all information in a model, scheduling in Revit cuts down on the time that a traditional workflow demands. Sustainable design is crucial in the design and construction process of any component, and Revit features several analytical tools that can help measure the environmental impacts of your building design. Because all information is intelligently connected in Revit, changes made in one view are carried through to another. Among other design software, Revit allows users to create a perfect and detailed building model in the shortest amount of time. The project was directed specially at the civil engineering undergraduates, as it is used in the industry. REVIT enables civil engineers to deliver the best results by allowing them to create virtual representations of building components. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is not widely used in the Sri Lankan Construction industry, and only a few people are aware of it. BIM has paved its way into the Sri Lankan construction industry thanks to vast development, foreign investments and large scale projects. In order to develop BIM integration strategies, the industry must first understand its potential. BIM has a lot of potential for integration into the life cycle of construction projects, which will pave the way for it to become the industry standard for construction projects in the near future. Through our project, we intended to create a space for budding Engineers and Architects along with enthusiasts to impart their knowledge on building information modeling software, where they can learn to process, plan, design, construct and manage buildings and infrastructure, thereby providing the construction industry with all rounded and software proficient Engineers. Our main objective of this project was to introduce the undergraduates who take courses related to design and construction fields to a well-refined software, and to encourage them to be knowledgeable about new platforms such as Revit, that could be beneficial for them in the future as fellow Engineers or Architects. Apart from that, we expected to give the participants a clear understanding of the benefits of learning a software such as Revit as opposed to other software such as AutoCAD. We aspired to encourage the students to look for additional useful software that will help them accomplish more in their careers and make an effort to learn them. Further, we wanted to provide students interested in learning Revit software with a competent institute where they can study it and learn how to make the maximum use of their knowledge. We also aimed to promote the IEEE Student Branch of SLTC and the IEEE IAS Student Branch Chapter of SLTC in the community and raise the profile of SLTC as a whole. The project “Introduction to REVIT” was held on the 5 th of March, 2022, with the chief objective of introducing a Building Information Modelling (BIM) software, and provide a starting point for those who are already interested in learning it. It was held as a virtual webinar via the Zoom platform. We invited Mr. R. H. M. Channa Malintha Senarathna from ArchiTech CAD Academy as our guest speaker for the event. He is a well experienced individual with over 8 years of lecturing in the field of construction. Further, ArchiTech CAD Academy is a well-organized institute which provides the best learning platform with its own unique learning management system. With being a one-day webinar, the project was completed within a span of approximately two hours. At the end of the webinar, the participants were allowed to clear any of their doubts, and were then given a design assignment to be completed within a week. The participants who submitted the assignment were awarded with a certificate of achievement if they had passed the eligibility criteria. Additionally, all the participants were awarded a certificate of participation for their dedication in being active participants in the event, and they were also given an opportunity to obtain a scholarship to pursue the course on the relevant software through the ArchiTech CAD Academy. At the end of our project, all the participants were introduced to a highly profitable software, which will enable them to stand out from the crowd in their careers.
