May 29, 2023 · 7:30 AM - 11:30 AM @ Kandy, National College of Education, Panideniya

Description

On the 29th of May 2023, an impactful Electrical Safety Program was conducted by the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Student Branch Affinity Group, in collaboration with the IEEE Student Branch of the University of Peradeniya, and proudly sponsored by Kelani Cables PLC. The program aimed to educate and enhance the technical skills of around 130 trainees from the National College of Education, Panideniya Peradeniya. Under the guidance of esteemed industry professionals and experts, the event provided participants with invaluable knowledge on safety, wiring, earthing of electronic appliances, electrical installation, and minor repairs. The program was specifically designed to cater to non-engineering students, offering them the opportunity to develop essential technical skills in a field crucial to their everyday lives. The program commenced at 1 pm and saw the attendance of distinguished guests, including Mr. Isuru Prasad, a Sales Engineer from Kelani Cables PLC, who conducted an enlightening session on electrical safety. Additionally, Mr. Jayantha Wijesinghe, the Co-Initiator and Coordinator of Kelani Saviya and Kelani Shakthi Projects, Mr. Nalin Samanthilaka, Assistant Sales Manager, Prof. Lilantha Samaranayaka, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Dr. Maheshi Dissanayaka, Advisor of the IEEE WIE Student Branch Affinity Group, Mr. Kapila Mahindasena, Chairperson of the National College of Education, Panideniya, along with other esteemed staff members, graced the event. The program was divided into two segments, with the first part focused on theoretical knowledge and the second part dedicated to hands-on practical sessions. Mr. Isuru Prasad shared valuable insights and conducted an engaging session, highlighting the importance of electrical safety practices. Participants were educated on various aspects, including the behavior of distribution boards, proper usage of residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs) and miniature circuit breakers (MCBs). The practical session, led by dedicated volunteers from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Peradeniya and IEEE WIE committee members, was facilitated by Mr. Thimira from the IEEE Student Branch. The aim and objectives of the practical session were explained, followed by interactive demonstrations on the workings of electrical systems within homes. Participants were given the opportunity to develop an extension cord and wire a lighting system, allowing them to gain practical experience under expert guidance. Throughout the event, participants were provided with refreshments, ensuring a comfortable and engaging learning environment. The feedback received from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive, as they expressed their gratitude for the knowledge gained and the practical skills acquired during the program. The collaborative efforts of the IEEE Women in Engineering Student Branch Affinity Group, the IEEE Student Branch of the University of Peradeniya, and the generous support from Kelani Cables PLC made this Electrical Safety Program a resounding success. The event not only enriched the technical knowledge of the participants but also empowered them to implement safe electrical practices in their daily lives.
