The inaugural Summer School on Emerging Photovoltaic Technologies unfolded from July 22 to 25, 2023, on the picturesque grounds of the University of Jaffna. This four-day academic endeavor served as a beacon, enlightening participants with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate workings of diverse solar cell technologies and modules. Moreover, it empowered them to apply their newfound knowledge and skills in real-world contexts, Summer School- - DAY 04 was organized by IEEE EDS and NTC Student branch chapter, collaborated with IEEE PES SB, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. All participants joined for a field visit to the Renewable Energy Hub at the Faculty of Engineering, Kilinochchi Campus, University of Jaffna. The hub houses the first floating solar panel in Sri Lanka. Around 90 students participated for the event. Participants were given the opportunity to see a real-world application of photovoltaic (PV) technology. They learnt about the design, construction, and operation of the floating solar panel.They were privileged to meet with the engineers and researchers who are responsible for developing the hub. This report is an intricate tapestry detailing the profound experiences of DAY 04 of this illustrious summer school.

Agenda: Keynote Sessions: SESSION 1: Eng. Ranjith Sepala, Chairman, Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority Sri Lanka, delivered an illuminating keynote address on the sustainable energy landscape. In his keynote address, Eng. Ranjith Sepala, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority Sri Lanka, illuminated the imperative shift towards sustainable energy solutions. He emphasized the urgent need to combat climate change and the depletion of fossil fuel resources, stressing that sustainable energy is not merely an option but a global necessity. Eng. Sepala provided a comprehensive overview of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and bioenergy, showcasing real-world success stories and illustrating their potential to revolutionize the energy sector. He underlined the economic and social benefits of sustainable energy, highlighting job creation and economic growth, and called upon the audience to become advocates for sustainable energy in their communities. In essence, Eng. Sepala's keynote speech painted a compelling vision of a sustainable energy future, emphasizing its global significance. His address inspired attendees to actively participate in the transition towards renewable energy, promoting environmental stewardship and economic resilience. SESSION 2: Eng. Selvarajah Prabaharan, Deputy General Manager, Northern Province, Ceylon Electricity Board Sri Lanka, shared invaluable insights into the dynamic world of energy, highlighting challenges and innovative solutions. In his address, he explored the intricate world of energy, highlighting both its challenges and innovative solutions. Eng. Prabaharan underscored the growing demand for reliable and sustainable energy sources while acknowledging the hurdles faced by the energy sector, including environmental concerns and grid resilience. He delved into the significance of renewable energy sources and showcased cutting-edge technologies such as smart grids and energy storage solutions that have the potential to revolutionize the sector. Eng. Prabaharan stressed the importance of energy efficiency and conservation, showcasing real-world success stories. Moreover, he emphasized the role of cross-sectoral collaborations and government policies in driving energy innovation, advocating for public-private partnerships to expand clean energy access. Demonstration on Laboratory Setups: In a carefully orchestrated demonstration, participants witnessed solar fitting in action, demystifying complex concepts through hands-on learning. The Session provided a hands-on and immersive experience that transcended theoretical knowledge. During this session, a remarkable outdoor learning experience unfolded. Instructors carefully orchestrated the practical demonstrations. As participants gathered around, the solar panels glistened under the sun, serving as a visual representation of sustainable energy in action. The session commenced with an engaging explanation of the various components of a solar energy system, from photovoltaic panels to inverters and charge controllers. Attendees were then guided through the step-by-step process of assembling and configuring these components. This hands-on activity allowed participants to witness firsthand how solar energy is harnessed and converted into electricity. Site Visits: Rooftop Solar PV Pilot Project: Participants scaled the heights of renewable energy, observing the practicality of solar technology on rooftops. Grid-Connected Wind Turbine : The group was enthralled by the elegant choreography of wind turbines, transforming gusts into sustainable power. Solar Measuring Center : Precision in solar measurement was unveiled, emphasizing the science behind harnessing the sun's energy. Solar Floating Solar Pilot Plant : The future of solar energy, floating solar, was a captivating sight, showcasing innovation in action. Biogas Pilot Project : The participants witnessed how waste can be transformed into electricity through a biogas pilot project. Palai Wind Farm: The majestic turbines of the Palai Wind Farm left an indelible impression, underscoring the potential of renewable wind energy.
