The IEEE NPSS Student Branch Chapter at the University of Moratuwa organized a highly successful field visit to the Gamma Center at Biyagama Industrial Zone on October 26, 2023. The primary objective of this visit was to provide students with valuable insights into the operations of the Gamma Center, fostering a deeper understanding of nuclear and plasma science. A total of 45 enthusiastic students participated in the event, showcasing a keen interest in expanding their knowledge within this specialized field. The highlight of the field visit was an engaging and educational lecture hosted at the Gamma Center. During this session, participants gained comprehensive insights into the diverse applications of nuclear and plasma science, particularly focusing on the center's role in sterilization processes. Following the lecture, students had the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the sterilization procedures applied to essential medical equipment such as syringes, catheters, surgical gloves, as well as everyday items like dry food. This hands-on experience allowed the students to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical applications, enhancing their appreciation for the significance of nuclear science in various industries. The event concluded on a positive note with the students expressing their gratitude to the Gamma Center for opening its doors and providing an enriching learning experience. The field visit not only contributed to the academic development of the participants but also strengthened the ties between the IEEE NPSS Student Branch Chapter and industry professionals, creating a platform for future collaboration and knowledge exchange.
