October 27, 2023 · 3:30 AM - 11:30 AM @ Kelaniya

Description

On October 27, 2023, the IEEE NPSS Student Branch Chapter at the University of Moratuwa organized a second field visit, this time focusing on the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Center located in Kelaniya. The primary aim of this visit was to provide 40 eager students with valuable insights into the field of Non-Destructive Testing, a critical aspect of materials evaluation without causing harm to the tested object. The participants displayed great enthusiasm in expanding their knowledge and understanding of this specialized subject during the visit. The key feature of the field visit was an enlightening talk hosted at the NDT Center, where attendees delved into the intricacies of tasks carried out at the facility. The presentation focused on the application of gamma rays in identifying cracks within interior surfaces and determining the depth of these cracks—an essential aspect of ensuring structural integrity in various industries. This educational discourse provided students with a firsthand look at the advanced techniques employed in NDT, fostering a deeper appreciation for the importance of non-destructive testing methodologies. In addition to the educational talk, attendees were given the opportunity to witness the tools and techniques used at the NDT Center, gaining practical insights into the real-world applications of their academic knowledge. The field visit concluded with expressions of gratitude extended to the NDT Center for opening its doors and sharing valuable expertise with the students. The event not only contributed to the academic enrichment of the participants but also facilitated a stronger connection between the IEEE NPSS Student Branch Chapter and the NDT industry, paving the way for continued collaboration and knowledge exchange.
