On December 12, 2023, the IEEE NPSS Student Branch Chapter at the University of Moratuwa organized the third field visit, to the Atomic Energy Board located in Wellampitiya. The primary aim of this visit was to provide students with valuable insights into the field of Nuclear Energy and Power. There were 30 participants and they displayed great enthusiasm in expanding their knowledge and understanding of this specialized subject during the visit. One of the key features of the field visit was an enlightening talk hosted at the Atomic Energy Board, where attendees delved into the history of nuclear energy, atomic bombs, and disasters that happened in the world due to the misuse of nuclear energy. Following that, there were two more thought-provoking speeches about nuclear power and radiation detecting methods. These educational discourses provided students with fresh insights about nuclear energy and advanced techniques employed in Atomic Energy Board, fostering a deeper appreciation for the importance of using nuclear energy responsibly. In addition to these educational talks, attendees were given the opportunity to witness the tools and techniques used at the premises, gaining practical insights into the real-world applications of their academic knowledge. The field visit concluded with a valuable Q&A session and expressions of gratitude extended to the Atomic Energy Board for opening its doors and sharing valuable expertise with the students. The event not only contributed to the academic enrichment of the participants but also facilitated a stronger connection between the IEEE NPSS Student Branch Chapter and the Atomic Energy Board, paving the way for continued collaboration and knowledge exchange.
