The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) at the University of Peradeniya (UOP), in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Society, organized a captivating field visit to two prominent energy facilities: the Moragahakanda Power Plant and the Vidullanka Biomass Power Plant. This collaborative effort aimed to provide attendees with practical insights into renewable energy generation technologies. The excursion commenced with a visit to the Moragahakanda Power Plant, boasting a substantial capacity of 25MW. Nestled amidst picturesque landscapes, participants had the opportunity to observe firsthand the intricate operations and advanced technologies powering the plant's efficient energy production. Guided by experts from the industry, attendees gained valuable knowledge about the plant's design, functioning, and its role in Sri Lanka's energy sector. Subsequently, the visit continued to the Vidullanka Biomass Power Plant, renowned for its innovative approach to sustainable energy generation, with a capacity of 3.3MW. Located within the lush greenery of the region, participants explored the plant's biomass-to-energy conversion processes, witnessing how organic materials are transformed into clean and renewable power. Engaging discussions with plant personnel provided insights into biomass energy technologies and their environmental benefits. The field visit, organized by IEEE PES at UOP in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Society, proved to be an enriching experience for all participants. It offered a unique opportunity to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical applications, inspiring future engineers and professionals to contribute towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.
