January 14, 2024 at 2:30 PM - February 4, 2024 at 2:30 PM @ Online event

Description

"A Global Call for Climate Change" GISLA 2024 is a prolonged version of GISLA 2021, featuring two main workshops and culminating in an AI Art competition. The first workshop, themed "Generative AI," was designed for AI enthusiasts and delivered by Prof. Roshan Ragel, Head of the Department of Computer Engineering at the University of Peradeniya. Professor Ragel adeptly unraveled the complex landscape of generative AI, shedding light on its pivotal role in technological development. It was a resounding success, attracting approximately 80 participants and providing a foundational understanding of generative AI engagingly. The second workshop focused on "Climate Change" and was led by Prof. K. W. G. Rekha Nianthi, from the Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya. This session provided a valuable discussion on the pressing issues of global warming and strategies for mitigation, with over 50 participants joining the conversation. The session not only highlighted the severity of climate-related challenges but also provided valuable insights into potential solutions. GISLA 2024 concluded with the main competition, an AI-based art contest, showcasing the creative potential of AI technology. The GISLA 2024, AI Art competition tackled the pressing issue of climate change through the innovative medium of AI art. We launched our Official website of GISLA 2024 parallelly with the workshop series. Competitors had to sign up for the website using their emails, and from our homepage, we gave them a clear idea about what GISLA2024 is and how to participate, along with the rules and regulations of the competition. We built the official website of GISLA2024 as the most creative evidence of the place where we talk about pressing global warming issues along with the solutions to minimize it. The competition was held entirely online through the official website of GISLA 2024. The response was overwhelming. With over 150 submissions pouring in, each offering a unique perspective on the theme "A Global Call for Climate Action". Participants were invited to submit their works through the official GISLA website, with each artist allowed a maximum of 3 entries. Throughout the weeks provided for winners to submit their artworks, we introduced the concept of 'artwork of the day' and shared selected artworks on the SB social media sites. This was aimed to increase motivation and gain reach while at the same time encouraging enthusiasm to participate in a global conversation. As the submission period drew close, a distinguished panel of three judges selected the most creative and impactful artworks. For the judging process, we included 10 judging criteria such as relevance to theme, creativity and originality, artistic expression, conceptual clarity, emotional impact, technical proficiency, inclusivity and diversity, accessibility, prominent use of Copilot-generated content, and completeness and submission quality to ensure the fairest judgments in selecting winners. A distinguished panel of three judges was tasked with selecting the most creative and impactful 3 artworks from the diverse array of entries, including a voting round on the Facebook page of the IEEE student branch of SLTC. This approach ensured a comprehensive evaluation and recognition of the participants' efforts. In the end, the winners were celebrated for their exceptional contributions to the competition, reflecting the talent and dedication of the participants. Finally, we awarded special E-certificates to the winners and participation E-certificates to all the other participants. Through this competition, we aimed to inspire action and dialogue about the importance of addressing climate change through art. With the great support and dedication of our organizing committee of GISLA 2024, we successfully concluded by achieving our main goal of raising awareness about the pressing issue of climate change and finding solutions for it through AI technology-based artworks.
