The IEEE Student Branch of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka organized the “Arises” photographic competition in collaboration with the IEEE WIE Student Branch Affinity Group of the university to commemorate Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2024. The competition was open to all undergraduates of the university with the aim of creating an opportunity to showcase the beauty and essence of this cultural festival through their photographic skills. All the enthusiasts were invited to submit their photographs under the theme of Sinhala and Tamil New Year through a Google Form within eight days from the date of commencement, which was April 20, 2024. But the deadline for the competition was extended for three more days at the request of the majority. Accordingly, the submissions were closed on May 1, 2024. The photographs that agreed with the guidelines were uploaded on the official Facebook page of the IEEE Wayamba University of Sri Lanka Student Branch, opening for voting on May 3, 2024. Voting closed on May 7, 2024, and the two winners were announced on May 9, 2024, under the categories of the best photograph and the most popular photograph through the official social media platforms. The best photograph was selected by a panel of judges representing the university official media unit, Wayoscope, based on creativity, consistency with the theme, etc., and the most popular photograph was determined by the number of votes received on the official Facebook page. The winners, Devinda Ashan from the category of best photograph and Nimansa Basnayaka from the category of most popular photograph, were awarded certificates to appreciate their talent and contribution. In conclusion, “Arises” successfully celebrated the value of culture, the festivity of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and the creative photographic talents of the undergraduates. The contribution of the organizing committee as well as the enthusiastic involvement of the participants set “Arises” as a remarkable event in the year.
