UvaXtreme 1.0, organized by the IEEE Student Branch of Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, was an eagerly anticipated hackathon held on June 29, 2024. This event provided a platform for students across various academic years to showcase their coding and problem-solving skills in a supportive and competitive environment. Designed to be inclusive and beginner-friendly, UvaXtreme 1.0 encouraged participation from students at all levels of study, promoting skill development and peer engagement. A total of 63 teams, comprising over 250 students from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years, participated in the hackathon and 300 Participants were there for the opening ceremony. Each year had its own separate hackathon hosted simultaneously via HackerRank, ensuring fair competition and tailored challenges appropriate to their level of study. Guest Speaker: Prof. Sandya Kumari, a distinguished academic, delivered an inspiring guest speech that set a motivational tone for the hackathon. Her insights and encouragement were well received by all participants. Hackathon Structure: The hackathon commenced at 4:00 PM and concluded at 7:00 PM. Each team engaged in solving challenging problems on the HackerRank platform, leveraging their coding skills and teamwork. IEEE Introduction: A brief introduction to IEEE and the benefits of membership was presented, encouraging students to consider joining the organization to further their professional development. Technical Setup: Instructions on how to use the HackerRank platform were provided to ensure all participants were well-equipped to compete effectively. This session included a walkthrough of the platform’s features and how to submit solutions. Expression of Gratitude: The organizers expressed their gratitude to all attendees, acknowledging their participation and enthusiasm. Goals and Objectives Promote Innovation and Problem-Solving: Encourage students to think creatively and solve challenging problems, fostering a culture of technological advancement. Showcase Student Skills: Provide a platform where students can display their coding and technical abilities in a competitive environment, gaining recognition for their talents. Encourage Teamwork: Teach students to work effectively in teams to tackle complex tasks, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and communication. Offer a Learning Experience: Combine theoretical lessons on hacking skills with hands-on problem-solving practice to create a comprehensive learning experience. Include First-Time Participants: Design the hackathon to be beginner-friendly, ensuring that first-time participants feel welcome and supported throughout the event. Prepare for IEEEXtreme v18: Help students gain valuable experience and build confidence in preparation for the upcoming IEEEXtreme v18 competition. Participation and Awards Group Participation: Group Size: Minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 people per group Entry Fee: No admission charge Awards: Winners from each year category (1st, 2nd, and 3rd years) were chosen based on their performance during the hackathon. Separate awards were given to the top participants in each category, recognizing their coding skills and problem-solving abilities.
