The IEEE WIE Student Branch Affinity Group of SLTC was thrilled to host the WIE Day 24’. In conjunction with the international IEEE WIE Day Celebration 2024, we organized a virtual session titled “Engaging More Women in AI and 4IR Technologies”. The event aimed to promote and support the advancement of undergraduates in STEM and IT fields by engaging undergraduates in AI and 4IR technologies while celebrating IEEE WIE Day through impactful and inspiring events. By engaging undergraduates in these rapidly evolving fields, the event sought to empower them to take on leading roles and make significant contributions. The event took place on July 7, 2024, from 07:00 PM to 09:00 PM via Zoom. It featured a dynamic session dedicated to exploring the transformative potential of AI and 4IR technologies. The primary objectives of WIE Day 24’ were: Celebrate the IEEE WIE Day 2024 Inspire and motivate more female Undergraduates in STEM and IT Provide Knowledge in AI and 4IR technologies Promote the IEEE Women in Engineering Student Branch Affinity Group of SLTC within the Students' community. To set the tone for the evening, Ms. Michelle Perera significantly contributed to the IEEE WIE Day Celebrations 2024 by delivering a compelling speech. As the Secretary of the IEEE WIE Sri Lanka Section, she focused on the significance of WIE Day celebrations and their impact on empowering women in STEM and IT fields. Her speech highlighted the importance of fostering a supportive community and driving gender diversity and inclusivity. Through her insights and experiences, Ms. Perera inspired attendees to take active roles in their careers and the broader engineering community. The key note session was conducted by our distinguished speaker, Mr. Sathindu Arachchige. He is a Senior AI/ML Engineer at Wiley, based in the New York City Metropolitan area, with extensive skills in AI/ML, MLOps, and Generative AI. He played a pivotal role in the IEEE WIE Day Celebrations 2024 as a keynote speaker. With his extensive experience as a Senior AI/ML Engineer, he provided valuable insights into the current trends and future directions of AI and ML. His session focused on practical applications and career opportunities in these fields, inspiring and encouraging undergraduates to pursue careers in AI and 4IR technologies. His expertise and engaging presentation significantly contributed to the event's success in empowering undergraduates in STEM and IT. The event also featured a vibrant Q&A session, where attendees had the opportunity to ask questions from the session. Attendees had the chance to ask about AI, AI job opportunities, and other relevant topics. This interactive segment allowed participants to gain valuable insights from the speaker and discuss their career aspirations. Additionally, a fun game of trivia about IEEE and the IEEE WIE section was organized through the site QUIZ.com, adding an element of excitement and fostering a sense of community among the attendees. This interactive and enjoyable activity helped attendees learn more about the organization while building connections with fellow participants. By bringing together experienced professionals and aspiring undergraduates in STEM and IT fields, the event paved the way for greater gender diversity and inclusivity in these critical fields.
