Arduino Challenge 2024 - Awareness Session

Sri Lanka Arduino Challenge 2024, organized by the IEEE IES Student Branch Chapter of SLTC in collaboration with the IEEE IES SL Chapter is a part of the IEEE Sri Lanka Challenge Sphere 2024 series conducted by the IEEE Sri Lanka Section Educational Activities Sub-Committee. The first day of the project was held on the 9th of June 2024 at 4:00 PM via Zoom Online Video Conferencing as the Awareness Webinar on Sri Lanka Arduino Challenge 2024. The inaugural event acquainted participants with a detailed overview of the project and the program flow. The participants were warmly welcomed by the moderators, Mr. Ranuga Edirisinghe and Ms. Chanuthi Minothma. Following that, the Welcome Speech was delivered by the project's Co-Chairman, Mr. Lakshitha Abeywickrama, officially to commence the event. The session was then handed over to the first special guest, Dr. Subodha Charles, Chairperson of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section Educational Activities Sub-Committee. He shared his insights, giving an extensive overview of the IEEE Sri Lanka Challenge Sphere 2024. He introduced the Challenge Sphere, explaining how Sri Lankan school students and undergraduates get the opportunity for hands-on experiences by taking part in various sectors. Additionally, he provided detailed information about the Arduino Challenge. Following this, Eng. Kavinga Ekanayake, who leads the Industry Relations Committee of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section and the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Sri Lanka Chapter, provided an introduction to the IEEE IES Sri Lanka Chapter and the purpose of the Arduino Challenge project. Additionally, he highlighted some of the notable achievements of IEEE Sri Lanka Section. Next, Professor Rangika Halwathura delivered his address, providing a clear distinction between invention and innovation. He highlighted the importance of innovation for a nation, particularly for Sri Lanka, a small island nation. Emphasizing that innovation is the path to a brighter future, his presentation was accompanied by a slideshow showcasing some of his work at the University of Moratuwa. This enabled participants to get an idea of the current work towards technological advancement in our country and enlightened them on the necessity for innovation as a small island nation. Furthermore, he discussed the impact of technological development on Sri Lanka. Following Professor Halwathura's address, Moderator Mr. Ranuga Edirisinghe provided an overview of the Arduino Challenge. As the session drew to a close, the Secretary of the project, Ms. Yashodha Bibile, delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the awareness session. Participants had the opportunity to interact with notable figures in the industry, especially in the electronics field, and were introduced to the IEEE Sri Lanka Challenge Sphere 2024 and the Sri Lanka Arduino Challenge 2024. This awareness session not only provided valuable knowledge and inspiration but also set a collaborative and enthusiastic tone for the entire challenge, encouraging participants to explore and innovate with Arduino technology.
