The IEEE WIE Student Branch Affinity Group of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka organized the "Breaking Silence" awareness session to address gender-based violence. Ms. Narthana Wevita, an attorney and activist, led discussions on legal frameworks, prevention strategies, and the societal impact of violence against women. The event promoted dialogue on intervention and advocacy, emphasizing the importance of collective action. It concluded with gratitude expressed to all participants and a call for ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence. The session delved into the definition and causes of violence, emphasizing the urgency of taking concrete steps to prevent it. Attendees engaged in discussions on legal frameworks and strategies for intervention in cases of violence. A distinguished legal expert, renowned for her advocacy against violence, shared her knowledge and experiences with the audience. Her comprehensive understanding of the legal landscape and commitment to social activism inspired attendees to take action against gender-based violence. The speaker addressed topics such as attitudes toward women, the low status of women in Sri Lanka, and the effects of harassment on the mental health of women. They talked about how important it is to increase legislative measures and public awareness in order to lessen violence against women. They also talked about reporting abuse, the adoption of appropriate laws for women's safety in Sri Lanka, and the reporting institutions. They also talked on the effects of technology, the state of the economy, the ramifications of violence against women, and differing perspectives on the equality and rights of women. They also talked about how women fit into the problem of violence.
