Event Description The webinar focused on Smart Grid Technology, which enhances energy systems by integrating real- time monitoring and control of energy flow. Key solutions discussed included advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), grid automation, and demand-side management. These technologies help optimize energy distribution, improve grid stability, and manage renewable energy integration. The session also highlighted innovations in sensors and AI, which support efficient grid operations and better consumer engagement for a sustainable energy future. Speaker Introduction Speaker: Mr. Janith Wijesinghe, a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at RMIT University, is a distinguished expert in control systems, power systems, and smart grids. He holds an MPhil and First-Class BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, as well as experience as a Laboratory Demonstrator at RMIT and a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Moratuwa. Session Highlights 1. Overview of Smart Grid: o Advanced electricity network using digital tech for real-time optimization. o Integrates renewables, storage, and distributed generation. o Enables two-way communication between utilities and consumers. 2. Issues and Challenges: o Integrating intermittent renewables. o Cybersecurity vulnerabilities o High costs for grid modernization. 3.Smart Grid: A Cyber-Physical System Perspective: o A system blending physical grid infrastructure with digital technology. o Cyber systems manage real-time monitoring, data, and decision-making. 4. Research Interest in Smart Grid Technology: o Consumer behavior in demand response. o Enhanced smart metering infrastructure. Conclusion The webinar effectively highlighted both the challenges and opportunities surrounding smart grid technology. Participants gained valuable insights into how technological innovations and strategic grid management can enhance the efficiency and resilience of modern energy systems. Mr. Janith Wijesinghe’s expertise provided an in-depth perspective on current trends and the future potential of smart grids, offering a comprehensive understanding of their role in transforming the energy landscape.
