Introduction On 13th March 2024, the Communication Society student chapter of the IEEE student branch at the University of Ruhuna organized an awareness session focused on career opportunities in the telecommunications industry. Held at the IS Seminar Room, the event was led by Eng. Sarath Wickramsuriya, a Senior Academic Fellow at SLIIT and a prominent figure in Sri Lanka’s telecommunications field. The session provided students with valuable insights into the evolution of the telecom industry, as well as its current and future job prospects. Event Objectives and Goals The primary objectives of the session were to: Raise awareness about the various career opportunities within the telecommunications industry. Provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the industry's evolution and the role of technological advancements. Equip participants with knowledge of the changing job market and the skills required to thrive in the telecom sector. Offer direct insights from an industry expert, helping students align their academic and professional goals. Summary Eng. Sarath Wickramsuriya delivered an engaging and informative presentation, discussing the historical evolution of the telecommunications industry and its transformation due to emerging technologies such as 5G, IoT, and AI. He emphasized how these changes are reshaping the job market, requiring new skills and innovative approaches. The session also highlighted the current state of the industry in Sri Lanka and globally, exploring various career pathways in telecommunications engineering, network management, and innovation. The event was attended by approximately 120 participants, who displayed a keen interest in the subject matter, as evidenced by the interactive Q&A session. Overall, the session succeeded in broadening students' perspectives on the telecommunications industry, preparing them to navigate its future opportunities.
