Description
Introduction The Communication Society of the IEEE student branch at the University of Ruhuna organized an online workshop on Docker, hosted by Mr. Uvin Perera from Pagero. The session aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Docker and its practical applications in software development and deployment. Event Objectives and Goals The workshop's primary objectives were: To introduce students to containerization technology and its significance in modern development. To compare Virtual Machines (VMs) with containers, highlighting the advantages of using containers. To provide a detailed overview of Docker architecture and essential commands. To give students practical insights through real-world examples of Docker use cases. Summary Mr. Uvin Perera delivered an informative session that covered the fundamental concepts of containers, the need for containerization, and how Docker works as a platform. The presentation began with a comparison between Virtual Machines and containers, explaining the differences in resource utilization and performance. The audience was then introduced to Docker's architecture, which included details on the Docker engine, images, containers, and registries. The session also featured a hands-on demonstration, where participants learned essential Docker commands for creating, managing, and running containers. The practical examples allowed students to understand how Docker is used in real-world development environments to streamline application deployment. The workshop was primarily attended by final-year and third-year students, who gained valuable knowledge that can be applied in their academic and professional pursuits.
