Introduction WiSTEM is a series of awareness sessions and industry visits aimed at encouraging school girls to explore STEM careers. Organised in collaboration with IEEE WIE Student Branch Affinity Groups across Sri Lanka, the initiative seeks to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields. The first session was conducted in collaboration with the IEEE WIE Student Branch Affinity Group of Uva Wellassa University on 9th January at Viharamahadevi Girls' High School, Badulla, targeting A/L students of all streams. Objectives Encourage school girls to explore STEM careers through role models, success stories, and hands-on learning. Address gender disparities by equipping young girls with knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue STEM. Provide school girls with mentorship and guidance related to pursuing careers in STEM. Event Overview The session introduced students to STEM fields and their significance for the present and future. It also raised awareness about IEEE and IEEE WIE, highlighting their role in supporting STEM education. To session ended in a marshmallow and spaghetti tower challenge, where the students worked in teams to build the tallest structure. The winning team was awarded a prize, adding an element of fun and motivation. Outcomes Increased awareness among students about STEM career opportunities. Introduction to IEEE and IEEE WIE and their contributions to STEM education. Hands-on engagement through an interactive activity, building teamwork and problem-solving skills. Conclusion The session successfully engaged and inspired school girls, equipping them with insights into STEM and encouraging them to consider future careers in the field. With a strong response from participants, WiSTEM aims to continue its mission by expanding its outreach through similar impactful sessions across the country.
