The IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS) Student Branch Chapter of University of Moratuwa, in collaboration with the Electrical, Electronic, and Telecommunication Engineering Sectional Committee of IESL, successfully hosted a public lecture on "Technological, Regulatory, and Organizational Elements of Nuclear Energy" . Held on June 2, 2025 , from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium, IESL , the session featured Dr. Sunil Weerakkody , Senior Level Advisor in Probabilistic Risk Assessment at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) , as the keynote speaker. Dr. Weerakkody shared in-depth insights into the evolving landscape of nuclear energy, with a special focus on the interplay between technology, regulatory frameworks, and organizational infrastructure. The lecture highlighted real-world applications of probabilistic risk assessment in ensuring the safety and reliability of nuclear power systems, along with international best practices and regulatory standards.
