Description
DesignHer 1.0 DesignHer 1.0 was a flagship initiative organized by the Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group of the IEEE Student Branch, University of Ruhuna. This empowering program was crafted to uplift and inspire female undergraduates in engineering by equipping them with industry-relevant skills in design and development. To empower aspiring female designers and developers by providing them with practical knowledge and hands-on exposure in: UI/UX Design Frontend Development Backend Development The initiative focused on encouraging creativity, confidence, and competence in tech, especially among women. Structure of the Program: DesignHer 1.0 unfolded through a three-part workshop series followed by a female-only frontend competition. Workshops (Skill-Building Phase): Workshop 1 – UI/UX Design ( vTool: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/487080 ) Covered design thinking, Figma prototyping, and user experience principles. Workshop 2 – Frontend Development ( vTool: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/487086 ) Introduced HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and responsive design fundamentals. Workshop 3 – Backend Development ( vTool: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/493286 ) Included essentials of server-side logic, databases, and tools like Node.js and MongoDB. Speakers: Industry professionals led sessions from Creative Software and final-year undergraduates from the Faculty of Engineering Webinar Quizzes: Each workshop included an interactive quiz session to reinforce learning. Top rankers were identified from each quiz and awarded certificates DesignHer Competition: ( vTool: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/493285 ) A female-only web development competition was held to conclude the program. Design a responsive frontend website using Figma for UI design Host the final site on Vercel and submit via GitHub, along with clear documentation Themes included career, education, health, security, and community empowerment, with real-world impact at the core. Award Ceremony Highlights: ( vTool: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/493322 ) Winners of the DesignHer Competition were formally announced Top quiz performers were also awarded for their consistent efforts Dr. Akila Wijethunge , a leading IEEE Region 10 leader, joined as the chief guest, inspiring attendees with her experience and journey Sponsors & Support: The success of DesignHer 1.0 was made possible through the generous support of: ACCLAR Bank of Ceylon (BoC) Sunquick Past senior IEEE volunteers from the Faculty of Engineering
