Description
The “Building Applications on the Blockchain” workshop was held on June 11, 2025, from 12:00 NOON to 2:00 PM at the Computer Center, Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna. Organized by the IEEE Student Branch in collaboration with the IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Communications Society, the session brought together students and blockchain enthusiasts to explore foundational concepts in blockchain and understand the concepts and applications of blockchains via building our own applications based on blockchain. The event began with a welcome address by the organizers, highlighting the importance of blockchain technology in enabling the next generation of decentralized applications. This was followed by an introduction to the session hosts, CoinCeylon and Intersect Sri Lanka, whose expertise played a key role in guiding participants through the practical and technical aspects of blockchain-based application development. The first part of the session introduced the essential building blocks of blockchain applications, focusing on the architecture, design considerations, and tools commonly used in the development process. Participants explored how decentralized applications (dApps) operate within blockchain ecosystems like Cardano, learning about the integration of smart contracts, user interfaces, and backend components to build fully functional and secure blockchain solutions. A major highlight of the workshop was the hands-on segment, where attendees were given the opportunity to engage in the practical process of designing and simulating simple blockchain applications. This interactive component allowed participants to experience how smart contracts are deployed, how user interactions are processed, and how decentralized logic governs application behavior—bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and functional implementation. The session concluded with a summary of key concepts and a forward-looking discussion on the potential of decentralized applications in various industries. Participants left the workshop equipped with foundational knowledge and practical insight into building applications on the blockchain—paving the way for innovation, entrepreneurship, and advanced study in this rapidly evolving field.
