Overview The awareness session was conducted by Mr. Hiruna Fernando, the Chairman of the IEEE Student Branch University of Ruhuna and Mr. Thanujaya Thennakoon, the Membership and Recruitment Committee Lead of the IEEE SB of University of Ruhuna. The awareness session was a remarkably successful event which was held with more than 250 participants from the undergraduates from the faculty of engineering of the University of Ruhuna. The following key point areas were discussed during the session. 1. What is IEEE? 2. What is IEEE SB of UOR? 3. What is IEEE membership? 4. What are the benefits of being an IEEE member? Objectives 1. To inform and make aware what is IEEE? - To inform the undergraduates from the faculty of engineering of the University of Ruhuna about what is IEEE and societies of IEEE. The international and local expansion of the IEEE community and the expansion of IEEE within the University of Ruhuna. Also, apprise about societies, committees and subcommittees under the IEEE Student Branch University of Ruhuna and past projects done by each chapter. 2. To make aware of the IEEE membership and benefits of it. Make aware of the IEEE membership and its price, and procedure for getting the membership. Along with that to inform about the benefits of being an IEEE member. The session also discussed the diverse opportunities available for engaging with IEEE through membership. Participants were introduced to the option of joining technical societies and special interest groups aligned with their interests, such as the IEEE Computer Society, Power & Energy Society, and Robotics and Automation Society. These avenues offer members valuable exposure to advanced learning, technical events, and peer networking. Additionally, members can participate in global competitions, innovation challenges, and mentorship programs designed to support both academic development and career advancement. The session emphasized that IEEE goes beyond academics—it plays a vital role in shaping one’s professional identity and connecting individuals to a worldwide community of innovators.
