May 28, 2025 · 3:30 AM - 7:30 AM @ Panadura, Alubomulla S. Mahinda Maha Vidyalaya
Description
The IEEE Computer Science Sri Lanka Section, in collaboration with the Computer Science Section (E3) of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), successfully conducted an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Workshop for School Students on 28th May 2025 at Alubomulla S. Mahinda Maha Vidyalaya, Panadura. The event drew the participation of approximately 250 students from Grades 9 to 11, marking a significant milestone in promoting early engagement with AI and computational thinking among school children. The workshop was technically and financially sponsored by the Institute of Computer Engineering Technology (iCET). Special appreciation is extended to Dr. Niroshan Samarawickrama, Founder of iCET, for his generous support and longstanding dedication to advancing IT education. The event was primarily coordinated and led by Ms. W. A. Suresha Perera, Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, The Open University of Sri Lanka. She also contributed as a resource person, ensuring the smooth execution of the program while fostering active student engagement and interaction throughout the workshop. The main segments of the workshop were delivered by Mr. Handapangodage Dewmal Nilanka Vijindra, CEO/Founder of SYIGEN and Senior Lecturer at iCET. Through interactive discussions and real-life examples, Mr. Dewmal skillfully guided students through fundamental and thought-provoking concepts such as what software is and how it appears in our daily lives, before diving into what AI is and the differences between traditional software and AI-based systems. He highlighted real-world examples of AI, explained how software is created, and explored what makes AI “smart.” The session also examined whether AI can think like humans, discussed the future of jobs in an AI-driven world, and emphasized the ongoing role of humans in such a future. Finally, he offered valuable insights on how students can prepare themselves for a future shaped by AI, leaving them inspired and equipped to begin their journey in the field. Adding further value, Ms. Shalini Rajasingham, Lecturer at the Center for Educational Technology and Media, The Open University of Sri Lanka, joined the event as a resource person and delivered the opening session on “Introduction to AI.” Her presentation contextualized the role of AI in everyday life and its transformative potential in shaping the future. A lively Q&A session closed the program, where students eagerly asked questions and received guidance on how to pursue careers and further learning in AI and computer science. This outreach initiative is part of a broader effort to promote STEM education and spark curiosity in underserved and rural communities. The IEEE Sri Lanka Section, together with SLAAS-Section (E3), aims to continue such impactful workshops to empower students across the island. The success of this event underscored the critical need to introduce AI education at the school level and set the foundation for future outreach programs aimed at fostering inclusive, technology-driven learning for all.
