The IEEE Student Branch and the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa , in collaboration with WSO2 , successfully hosted Workshop 1 of Innovate with Ballerina 2025 on 21st July 2025. This workshop marked the beginning of a series of technical sessions designed to equip participants with the essential skills needed to excel in the Innovate with Ballerina 2025 national-level idea hackathon. The focus of the session was on data handling in real-world applications using the Ballerina programming language. Participants gained hands-on insights into working with data end-to-end: from extracting it through APIs, to transforming, storing, and retrieving it for backend systems. The session was conducted by Mr. Gayal Dassanayake (Senior Software Engineer, WSO2) , whose expertise and demonstrations offered participants an in-depth understanding of how Ballerina simplifies and streamlines modern backend development. His explanations highlighted how Ballerina’s data-centric features enable developers to build efficient, reliable, and maintainable applications. The workshop was attended by participants representing a diverse group of enthusiastic undergraduates and tech enthusiasts from across the country. Their active engagement during the session and thoughtful questions in the Q&A segment reflected their curiosity and eagerness to embrace Ballerina for solving real-world challenges.
