Description
The IEEE MTT-S Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa successfully organized a technical webinar titled “Advanced Antennas for Space Applications” on October 30, 2025 . The session was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dush Thalakotuna (PhD, Senior Member IEEE) , Associate Professor at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. This webinar was the first technical event conducted by the newly established MTT-S Student Branch Chapter, aiming to ignite enthusiasm among students toward research and development in the fields of microwave, antenna, and space communication engineering . During the 90-minute session, Assoc. Prof. Thalakotuna provided an in-depth exploration of modern antenna technologies designed for space missions , emphasizing how evolving design methodologies are addressing the growing challenges in satellite communication systems. The discussion covered topics such as high-gain antenna design, beamforming techniques, miniaturization, material selection for harsh environments, and integration of antennas in compact satellite platforms . The speaker also shared valuable insights from his own research and industry collaborations, offering participants a unique perspective that bridged both academic and practical viewpoints. The event attracted around 30 participants , including undergraduate and postgraduate students, academic staff, and professionals interested in RF and microwave engineering. A highly interactive Q&A session followed the presentation, where participants actively engaged with the speaker to clarify concepts and explore potential research directions in space-related applications. Overall, the webinar was a resounding success , significantly contributing to the technical growth of the chapter and motivating students to pursue advanced research in microwave and antenna technologies. It also marked a major milestone for the MTT-S Student Branch Chapter at the University of Moratuwa, setting the foundation for future workshops, collaborative projects, and technical initiatives.
