Introduction The second session of the Tech Pulse 2025 series, titled “Generative AI: Applications & Opportunities in Education for Undergraduate Students,” was successfully held on 29th April 2025. The session was organised by the IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the IEEE Women in Engineering Student Branch Affinity Group of University of Peradeniya. It took place at the University of Peradeniya, from 9:00 AM onwards. The event featured an insightful presentation by Dr. Kamalanath Samarakoon, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Computer Engineering at the SLIIT Kandy Uni, focusing on the growing impact of Generative AI in education. Objectives The main objectives of the session were to: Introduce undergraduates to the fundamentals of Generative AI Explore emerging applications of AI in education and learning Encourage students to stay updated with modern technological trends Inspire innovative thinking and problem-solving through AI tools Provide guidance on opportunities available in AI-driven fields Event Overview The session commenced with an engaging and informative talk delivered by Dr. Kamalanath Samarakoon. He provided participants with a comprehensive introduction to Generative AI, explaining its concepts, capabilities, and real-world applications in a clear and accessible manner. Dr. Samarakoon highlighted how Generative AI was transforming education by enhancing learning experiences, improving productivity, and enabling new approaches to creativity and research. Through practical examples and thought-provoking insights, he demonstrated how undergraduate students could effectively utilize AI tools to support their academic and professional growth. The session encouraged participants to think critically about the role of emerging technologies in shaping the future. Students were challenged to explore beyond traditional learning methods and to view AI as a powerful enabler of innovation rather than just a technical trend.
