ROBOFEST (SLIIT) – Event Summary

ROBOFEST is the flagship annual robotics competition organized by the Faculty of Engineering, SLIIT , aimed at strengthening STEM education through hands-on robotics, electronics, teamwork, and problem-solving for both school and university participants. Event scope and structure (2025 edition) ROBOFEST has evolved into an island-wide platform that connects student creativity with real-world engineering challenges. The 2025 competition was structured around three main categories: School, University, and Open , with record participation reported as 300+ school teams , 250+ university teams , and ~15 open category teams . Preliminary rounds were conducted prior to the finale to shortlist top-performing teams (e.g., video-based screening for school teams and a live problem-solving round for university teams), culminating in the grand finale. Technical highlights and outcomes A key technical milestone in ROBOFEST 2025 was the introduction of Sri Lanka’s first autonomous drone competition , expanding the event beyond ground robotics and setting a new benchmark for local robotics innovation. Outreach and STEM impact Beyond the competition, SLIIT FOE conducted school outreach workshops (e.g., “Introduction to Robotics”) to inspire early-stage learners and broaden national STEM participation. Under IEEE ComSoc Sri Lanka Chapter technical co-sponsorship, Providing technical visibility and professional alignment with IEEE engineering practice Supporting judging/mentoring through subject-matter experts (where applicable) Encouraging best practices in evaluation, fairness, and student development Via the IEEE ComSoC SBU SLIIT we also financially support the event (LKR 30, 000).
