Description
Hands of Hope was a charity and educational outreach program successfully organized by the IEEE Women in Engineering Student Branch Affinity Group of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. The event was held on 18th October 2025, from 8.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m., at Shripathi Girl’s Home, Diyakalamulla, Kuliyapitiya. The main objective of this initiative was to support and uplift underprivileged schoolchildren by providing educational assistance, motivational engagement, and essential donations, while also fostering social responsibility among university students. A total of 20 undergraduate volunteers from Wayamba University actively participated in the program. The day commenced with a warm welcome and an introductory allowing volunteers and students to interact and build a friendly environment. Parallel academic sessions and activities were conducted for different age groups. A Grade 10 and 11 Mathematics session was conducted for 9 students (5 from Grade 10 and 4 from Grade 11), focusing on a two-hour paper discussion. A Grade 8 and 9 Mathematics session was conducted for 10 students (8 from Grade 8 and 2 from Grade 9), also based on a structured two-hour paper discussion. For 21 students under Grade 8, interactive team games and creative activities were organized. After those sessions, all students participated in a dream-sharing session, where they wrote about their future aspirations. This was followed by a fun and engaging hat game, allowing students to showcase their talents through singing, dancing, acting, or other skills. The program concluded with the handover of donations and the closing of the event. The donations included books, pens, pencils, pencil purses, storybooks, and dry food items, which were distributed among the children to support their educational and daily needs. Finally, the event concluded on a heartwarming note where the volunteers reflected on the meaningful time spent with the children. As volunteers, we gained a truly wonderful and memorable experience through interacting, teaching, and sharing joyful moments with them. The program ended with smiles, gratitude, and a happy farewell, as we bid goodbye to the children with cherished memories and a sense of fulfilment, looking forward to continuing such impactful community service initiatives in the future.
