Description

Navigator 3.0 was an IEEE awareness and orientation session conducted to introduce newly enrolled undergraduates to IEEE, its global significance, and the academic, professional, and leadership opportunities available through active membership and volunteering. The session was organized for Intake 43 students of the Faculties of Computing, Engineering, and Technology, with the objective of familiarizing them with professional bodies at an early stage of their university journey. The program provided a comprehensive overview of IEEE as the world’s largest technical professional organization, highlighting its role in advancing technology and developing international standards. Students were introduced to the IEEE organizational structure, including IEEE Region 10, the Asia-Pacific Region, and the IEEE Sri Lanka Section, along with their roles in supporting student activities, leadership development, and regional and national initiatives. Navigator 3.0 also focused on the IEEE Student Branch of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, presenting its history, significance, awards and recognitions, and contributions to the student community. The importance of active participation and volunteering within IEEE was strongly emphasized, illustrating how involvement supports the development of leadership, communication, teamwork, and professional skills that complement academic learning. In addition, the session introduced the IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group of KDU and one of the four chapters under the IEEE Student Branch of KDU, the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter. Overall, Navigator 3.0 successfully created awareness and motivation among newly enrolled students to actively engage with IEEE and participate in its volunteering initiatives.
