Description

The 3MRC – 3 Minute Research Challenge was successfully conducted on 17 January at Curtin University Colombo , organized by the IEEE Student Branch Curtin University Colombo . The competition provided a platform for undergraduate and recent graduate researchers to present their research concisely within a strict three-minute format using a single static slide. The objective of the event was to strengthen research communication skills, promote innovation, and foster collaboration between academia and industry. Participants presented a diverse range of multidisciplinary research topics spanning power systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, sustainable engineering, and software systems. The competition was evaluated by a distinguished panel comprising both academic and industry experts. The academic judging panel included representatives from The Open University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, and the University of Moratuwa, while the industrial judges represented the Road Development Authority and the Ceylon Electricity Board. Their collective expertise ensured that each presentation was assessed based on academic quality, originality, technical depth, and real-world applicability. All participants adhered to clearly defined rules and regulations, including strict time limits, originality requirements, and professional presentation standards, ensuring fairness and consistency throughout the competition. The event was supported by Curtin University Perth as the Title Sponsor, with INSEE Cement and Brantel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd as Bronze Sponsors. Publicity and outreach were conducted through IEEE and university communication channels, resulting in strong student engagement and participation. Overall, the 3MRC successfully achieved its objectives by promoting concise scientific communication, highlighting high-quality student research, and reinforcing the IEEE Student Branch’s role in cultivating a strong research and innovation culture within the university.
