Role of LNG-Based Combined Cycle Power Plants in Sustainable Power Generation

February 2, 2026 · 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM @ Online event

Description

The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) successfully organized an online guest lecture on “Role of LNG-Based Combined Cycle Power Plants in Sustainable Power Generation” on 2nd February 2026 from 8.00 PM to 9.00 PM. The session was delivered by Eng. (Ms.) Anuji Withana, Plant Engineer at Sobadhanavi Power Plant, who shared valuable insights into the operation and significance of LNG-based combined cycle power plants in modern power systems. The lecture highlighted how combined cycle technology improves power plant efficiency by utilizing both gas and steam turbines, enabling better fuel utilization and reduced environmental impact compared to conventional power generation methods. During the session, participants were introduced to the role of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in supporting cleaner and more sustainable electricity generation. The speaker also discussed practical aspects of power plant operations, real-world challenges faced in the industry, and the importance of adopting advanced generation technologies to meet the growing energy demand while maintaining environmental responsibility. The interactive nature of the lecture allowed students to gain industry exposure and a deeper understanding of sustainable power generation technologies. Participants had the opportunity to engage with the speaker through a question-and-answer session, where they clarified technical concepts and learned about career pathways in the power and energy sector. Overall, the guest lecture provided an excellent platform for students to connect academic knowledge with real-world engineering applications while gaining insights from industry expertise.
