Field Visit to Samanalawewa Hydro Power Plant

The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) organized a field visit to the Samanalawewa Hydropower Plant on 31st January 2026 with the objective of providing students with practical exposure to large-scale power generation systems. The visit was attended by approximately 115 participants, including around 100 students and 15 staff members, making it a well-engaged and impactful educational activity. The visit offered participants a valuable opportunity to observe the real-world operation of a hydropower plant and understand the fundamental principles of hydroelectric power generation. Students were introduced to key components of the facility, including the dam, intake structures, penstocks, turbines, generators, and control systems. The technical staff of the plant provided detailed explanations on how water flow is utilized to generate electricity efficiently while maintaining system stability and safety. During the visit, participants gained insights into plant operation, maintenance practices, and the role of hydropower in Sri Lanka’s energy mix. The session also highlighted the importance of renewable energy sources in achieving sustainable power generation and reducing environmental impact. The field visit created an interactive learning environment where students were able to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Participants actively engaged by asking questions and clarifying technical concepts related to power generation, grid integration, and plant efficiency. Overall, the visit to the Samanalawewa Hydropower Plant was a highly informative and enriching experience that enhanced students’ understanding of renewable energy technologies and inspired them to further explore the field of power and energy engineering.
