Byte & Build: Game Dev Edition

May 1, 2025 · 5:30 AM - 6:30 AM @ Online event

Description

On May 1, 2025, the second day of the Byte and Build: Game Dev Edition, organized by the IEEE Student Branch CS Chapter at Mody University of Science and Technology (MUST) in collaboration with IEEE Student Branch CS Chapter at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, offered participants a highly engaging and practical learning experience. The focus of the session was on the hands-on aspect of game development, guiding attendees through the process of creating a basic game from the ground up. The session was facilitated by Mr. Tharindu Munasinghe, a second-year student at Wayamba University, who began with a concise introduction to popular game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine. He then proceeded with a comprehensive live demonstration, walking participants step by step through the development of a simple yet fully functional game. Participants learned how to: Set up the game environment Design and animate characters Implement player movement and controls Integrate sound effects and user interface elements With Mr. Munasinghe providing real-time assistance, attendees actively followed along, coding and testing their game features in parallel. The session was interactive and collaborative, with participants enthusiastically engaging with the speaker, asking questions, and supporting one another through technical challenges. With over 30 attendees, the session fostered a vibrant and productive atmosphere. By the end of the workshop, each participant had developed a working game prototype and gained a practical understanding of the foundational elements of game development. This hands-on session proved to be both inspiring and educational. As the combined effort of the IEEE SB CS Chapter MUST and the IEEE SB CS Chapter WUSL, it served as a significant milestone in fostering innovation, technical skill-building, and peer collaboration. The initiative continues to empower aspiring game developers by providing them with meaningful exposure and real-world experience in the field.
