February 26, 2026 · 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM @ Online event

Description

The IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa successfully hosted an insightful webinar on 26th February 2026 via Zoom titled “Battery Energy Storage Systems and Solar Energy Systems.” The session was organized to enhance students’ understanding of modern energy storage technologies and solar power integration. The webinar was conducted by Mr. Wohan Thanurageeth , Electrical Engineer – Utility Projects at Hayleys Fentons Limited . Drawing from his industry experience, he provided a comprehensive introduction to solar energy systems , discussing topics such as the photovoltaic effect , the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) concept , inverter technologies, and the architecture of utility-scale solar power plants , while also highlighting key technical challenges faced in solar energy integration. The session also explored Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), where participants learned about the main components of BESS, different battery technologies, charging and discharging processes, the concept of C-rate, round-trip efficiency, and the wide range of applications of BESS in modern power systems. The session encouraged active participation, with attendees engaging enthusiastically through questions and discussions, making the event both informative and interactive.
